Mayda et al. (2016) examine whether immigration is better for Republican or Democrat politicians. They find, to the surprise of no one, that more immigration=more Democrats. It only translates to more Republican votes when the size of migration is so large that it’s a salient issue.

Keep in mind that the data set is from 1994-2012, when Republicans didn’t focus on immigration much. So it’s not likely that the immigrants are Democrats because of immigration restrictions.

Doran et al. (2016) examines the American H-1B visa program, which allows high-skilled foreign tech workers to work in the U.S. for a limited amount of time at top tech firms. They find that the effects of the visas are insignificant on patent growth and employment growth, and that they reduce employee wage growth and decreases the amount of training companies are willing to offer to prospective employees. Essentially, the visa has insignificant or negative effects on high-skilled employees.
