The following quotes (broken into smaller messages for convenience) are from The Coming Generation (1900).
"You rear your child up to love its country, and you support a social system which declares that the child has no right to the country, but must pay for permission to live on it as it is the property of private individuals."

"You shout for liberty, and you surrender your children to the mercies of capitalism which will seize them as soon as they leave school, and will devote their little bones, muscles and undeveloped brains to the task of grinding out profits for a boss."

"Are you doing your duty? Love Ireland! Yes, if by ‘Ireland’ you mean not only the earth and the waters, but the men and the women, the boys and the girls – the people of Ireland, in fact."

#Irishpeople
"Ireland without her people is nothing to me, and the man who is bubbling over with love and enthusiasm for ‘Ireland’, and can yet pass unmoved through our streets and witness all the wrong and the suffering, the shame and the degradation wrought upon the people of Ireland, aye, wrought by Irishmen upon Irishmen and women, without burning to end it, is, in my opinion, a fraud and a liar in his heart, no matter how he loves that combination of chemical elements which he is pleased to call ‘Ireland’."

"...win for them a right to live in that country, a right to enjoy its beauties, and revel in its abundance, irrespective of the wishes of any employer or landlord."

#children #country
"...the right of citizenship, the right to live in the country, and the right to enjoy those fruits of labour the country will yield to its children.

That is the reward you should render the children for their love of country; win the country for them and leave it behind you as theirs to enjoy free and unfettered – neither under the heel of foreign tyrant, nor yielding disguised tribute to native slave driver."

"You are neglecting your duty as long as you allow your City Hall to be in the power of men who as landlords derive their living from the rents they extort...

You are traitor to your duty as long as you elect to Parliament the members of a political party which... is officered, managed and financed by that same class – the landlords of our city slums."

This last quote should remind you that one in four of our elected representatives is a landlord, creating a conflict of interest between their duty to the Irish people and their own desire for personal gain.
"...making the Irish people really and fully the owners of Ireland, which is what is meant by an

IRISH SOCIALIST REPUBLIC."

To anyone watching the channel but not engaging in discussion, this is an open invite to voice your opposing views. We welcome debate and it could be an opportunity to find some common ground between nationalists and the various socialist and republican groups that comprise the left.
"If a man takes a farm from which a tenant has been evicted, he is tightly called a traitor, but who ever heard or read of the capitalist Home Rule press of this country saying a hard word about the scabs who go in on a strike or lockout, even when those scabs were imported, as was the case during the tailors’ lock-out, the saddlers’ strike, or the engineers’ lock-out? If the men who were imprisoned for threatening black-legs during the engineers’ lock-out had been engaged in a dispute over farms, we would have been told that they were 'patriots suffering for their country.' But as they were only workmen fighting for their class interests, we were told by the Home Rule newspapers that they were 'misguided individuals.' "

"The S.L.P. is a political and economic party, seeking the conquest of public power in order to clear the way for the Social Revolution. Let it keep to that. It is a big enough proposition."
"I have long been of opinion that the Socialist movement elsewhere was to a great extent hampered by the presence in its ranks of faddists and cranks, who were in the movement, not for the cause of Socialism, but because they thought they saw in it a means of ventilating their theories on such questions as sex, religion, vaccination, vegetarianism, etc., and I believed that such ideas had or ought to have no place in our programme or in our party."

"...we were as a body concerned only with the question of political and economic freedom for our class. We could not claim to have a mission to emancipate the human mind from all errors, for the simple reason that we were not and are not the repositories of all truth. These simple propositions, as they appear to me, I saw to be neglected by the tendency on the part of the European Socialists as a whole to make their press and platform the stumping ground for every idea that had the distinction of being unconventional or in any manner a protest against established ideas."
"We all know how insidiously writers like Bebel, Bax and others have striven to link Socialism with hostility to the monogamic marriage system...

'... is it not queering Socialism to take ... the position that justifies the notion that the sexual or matrimonial question is a cardinal Socialist question, when, in fact, Socialism has nothing to do with it.'

The italics are mine, but the words as quoted are Comrade DeLeon’s own. In them he exactly voices my sentiments."
"I personally reject every attempt, no matter by whom made, to identify Socialism with any theory of marriage or sexual relations."
