Suchir Balaji, 26, the ex-OpenAI researcher who exposed its alleged “copy now, ask forgiveness later” approach to copyright, was found dead in his apartment on Nov. 26 after a wellness check.
Police say there’s “no evidence of foul play,” but the cause of death remains a mystery—just like whether ChatGPT’s training data has ever seen a proper license.
Balaji accused OpenAI of scraping books, articles, and websites without permission to train ChatGPT, calling the methods “unsustainable” before quitting in protest.
Named in lawsuits, including one by The New York Times, Balaji reportedly held key evidence against OpenAI.
Balaji, a UC Berkeley grad, once dreamed of AI curing diseases but grew alarmed by OpenAI’s practices, which he said weren’t “fair use.”
