Dear Colleagues,

The deadline for 2020 Summer Students projects is

*** Thursday, 6 February 2020 ***

CERN EP department has been allocated a quota of 102 Member State (MS) students (+3 for TH department) for the 2019 Summer Students program (there will also be a comparable number of Non-Member State (NMS) students, projects that are not allocated MS students may be assigned students from this group).

CMS is likely to receive some 26 (MS) + 26 (NMS) students.

In order to ensure that the EP department provides an adequate number of good supervisors, CERN Users are encouraged to participate in the supervision of Summer Students.

Supervisors are expected to be resident at CERN for most of the duration of the projects, in particular for the first weeks, and are responsible for organizing adequate replacement supervision when absent from CERN for more than a few days. CERN Users are encouraged to propose projects for summer students; for administrative reasons, they are asked to provide the name of a Staff Member as alternative contact. It is possible to foresee more than one student per project, although given the expected oversubscription of students, this should be considered very exceptional. Administration and financing of the summer students is taken care of by the HR department.

As last year, the tools we are using now are in Indico (for collecting projects), Smart Recruiters (for viewing candidates` profiles) and a new summer student tool where supervisors have to enter their candidate selection and where an algorithm will make the final allocation.

To submit a project proposal, go to:
https://indico.cern.ch/event/872092/
Login: CERN username and password

When submitting your proposal, please fill in all fields

- start (with the word CMS!) the description of your project (at least 5 lines)
- indicate the type of computing training (if any) that may be beneficial for the prospective student
- specify the approximate ratio of physics/engineering/computing content of the project (as percentages)
- indicate the expected training value to the student of the project proposal
- indicate the computing skills required

These indications will help to select the best proposals and to match them to the skills profile of the population of applicants.

Please find below the link for potential supervisors to submit a project proposal(s). Once you have completed your proposal please don't forget to hit the "submit" button in order to submit your proposal as otherwise it will not be registered: https://indico.cern.ch/event/872092/

Additional details on the project proposals are given in the following memo by the Summer Students Coordinator of HR Department, Adriana Bejaoui.

Thank you in advance for your cooperation and for submitting your proposals as early as possible, but at the latest by the deadline.

Please take note that the Projects submitted after the deadline will automatically be considered as reserve projects at best.

Thanks!
Best regards,
Tiziano Camporesi

❇️ Free webinar: What's Next in Robotics?

Robotics is revolutionizing nearly every aspect of modern life, from manufacturing and transportation to healthcare and retail. We recently sat down with Professors Jeannette Bohg, Marco Pavone, and Dorsa Sadigh to learn more about their robotics graduate courses offered through Stanford Center for Professional Development.

The wide-ranging conversation covers topics such as:
The challenges of human-robot interaction
The future of autonomous vehicles
The application of machine learning in robotics
The difficulty of integrating data from multiple sensors
