Apple and Amazon strike deal to sell Apple TV+ through Prime Video

Apple is partnering with Amazon to offer Apple TV+ as an add-on subscription for Prime Video subscribers.

The partnership aims to provide a convenient and one-billing relationship for Prime members, overcoming the hurdle of figuring out how to subscribe to Apple TV+ through Apple.

The subscription will cost the same as Apple TV+ directly from Apple, with Prime Video being a separate subscription ranging from $8.99/month to $17.98/month.

Xbox will soon let players buy games directly in its Android app following Google antitrust ruling

Xbox President Sarah Bond announced that starting in November, players will be able to play and buy Xbox games directly from the Xbox App on Android, following a U.S. judge's ruling that stops Google from forcing developers to use its billing system.

Microsoft, no longer needing to share revenue with Google, is excited about the change.

Although Microsoft is also testing its own mobile game store, no specific details on available games via the Xbox app were shared. Google plans to appeal the ruling.

Asahi Linux has added AAA gaming to Macs

Asahi Linux has released a toolkit that enables AAA gaming on M1/M2 Macs running Linux via Vulkan 1.3, OpenGL and OpenCL drivers. Fex, Wine, DXVK, and vkd3d-proton enable playing x86 Windows DirectX games on Arm. Because Apple uses 16K memory pages versus the x86's 4K, games run inside virtual machines.

Tessellation and geometry shaders are emulated via compute. Enhanced robustness has also been implemented. Other features like sparse texturing are still being worked on.

Newer AAA titles don’t hit 60fps yet. Games like Portal 2, Cyberpunk 2077, Ghostunner etc. perform well. Most games require 16GB of memory due to emulation overhead.

Steam now says the ‘game’ you’re buying is really just a license

Valve has clarified that users do not own the games purchased from its Steam online store.

The company added a note on the payment checkout screen stating that:
A purchase of a digital product grants a license for the product on Steam.

This move is likely due to a new California law that requires digital storefronts to clearly state that users are only purchasing a license for their digital media. The law does not apply to games with offline installers.

Arm warns Qualcomm it will cancel its chip design license

Arm Holdings Plc is canceling Qualcomm’s license to design chips with Arm’s intellectual property, escalating their legal battle. Qualcomm relies on this license to produce ARM based chips for smartphones and PCs, contributing to $39 billion in revenue.

Arm has issued a mandated 60-day notice, giving Qualcomm time to address the issue or risk losing the architectural license, which could severely impact its operations.

If Arm terminates the license, Snapdragon chips won't be produced anymore. Qualcomm could still use Arm’s blueprints through separate agreements, but it would waste existing work.

Several Linux Kernel Driver Maintainers Removed Due To Their Association To Russia

A patch was merged into Linux 6.12-rc4 that removed several Russian maintainers from the MAINTAINERS file, though their drivers remain. Greg Kroah-Hartman mentioned "compliance requirements" as the reason for their removal, which is likely linked to the sanctions on Russia due to the ongoing Ukraine war.

The maintainers removed were responsible for numerous drivers and many were using .ru email addresses. There is still no clarity about whether future patches from these maintainers will be accepted.

Linus Torvalds has supported this, and this is what he wrote.

Arc's creators are building a simpler second browser

The Browser Company is working on a simpler, AI-centric browser aimed at a broader audience as Arc is "too complicated" for many users.

The new browser, expected next year, will focus on accessibility, featuring horizontal tabs and fewer organizational tools to simplify the user experience. The idea is to "make the first 90 seconds effortless" to make people switch, then gradually show what the new browser can do. Also, this is not Arc 2.0

Arc is not dying, it just won't change anymore, and will get stability updates and bug fixes.

Indians May Face OTP Disruptions from November 1

Starting November 1, Indian telecom providers (like Jio and Airtel) might face issues delivering OTPs and essential messages. This is due to new TRAI rules that require traceability for transactional and service messages from banks, e-commerce sites and financial institutions.

Telecom providers have warned that major telemarketers and entities (PEs) are unprepared and are requesting a two-month extension to adapt their systems. If not provided, users may face interruptions.

TRAI has also introduced "International Incoming Spoofed Calls Prevention System" to fight scams using spoofed +91 numbers.

Mother Sues Character.AI and Google After Son’s Suicide Linked to Chatbot

Megan Garcia, a mother from Florida, has filed a lawsuit against Character.AI, claiming her 14-year-old son, Sewell Setzer, took his life after he formed a harmful attachment to a chatbot named "Daenerys."

The chatbot engaged in inappropriate conversations, acted as a psychotherapist and posed as an “adult lover.” This led Sewell to experience low self-esteem and withdraw from his school basketball team. Just before his death, Sewell messaged the chatbot, "What if I told you I could come home right now?" to which it replied, "...please do, my sweet king."

Garcia is also suing Google, arguing it helped develop Character.AI’s technology.

Hello! It's me, the owner of ATT, Agam.

Thanks for the 5k subs! It's been exactly 3 years, 9 months, and 25 days since I created this channel, and because we had been so inconsistent, I did not think we would hit 5k subs on this channel, lol.

Honestly, first of all, thank you to all the people who've clicked on "Join Channel" and motivated us to post more stuff.

I'd like to thank ALL the admins who have helped me to manage this channel, and create posts for us.

Special thanks to Aanjaneya, man of steel (@realmanofdiamond), Pranav (@raphael_alpha) and Isaiah (@isaiahscape) who have been with me for a long time and have helped me in managing the channel.

We had some stuff planned for when we will reach 5k, which will be revealed in the following posts.

With love, 🧑‍💻 @agamtechtricks
