JAMES H. BILLINGTON FELLOWSHIP
The Kennan Institute seeks applications from scholars who have received their Ph.D. within the past 10 years for the James H. Billington Fellowship to conduct research on Russian history and culture. The Billington Fellowship was established in 2016 in tribute to the co-founder of the Kennan Institute, former Director of the Wilson Center, and former Librarian of Congress, James H. Billington. Dr. Billington made enduring contributions to the field of Russian Studies, and in our nation’s ability to understand and maintain bridges of dialogue with the Russian people. He was not only the author of The Icon and the Axe (1966), Fire in the Minds of Men (1980), and Russia in Search of Itself (2004), among other seminal works; he was the visionary behind the Open World Leadership Center, which has facilitated the travel of over 24,000 individuals from Eurasia to the United States to meet with members of Congress and visit across the United States.

The Program on Ethics and Public Life at Cornell University invites applications to the Philosophers at Risk Visiting Scholar Fellowship for the academic year of 2023-24.

The visiting position is, according to the Cornell website, for a duration of 2–4 months, anytime during the academic year at Cornell. The fellowship provides air-travel expenses; a stipend of $7,000–$9,000 (depending on duration of stay); assistance with US visa application; full access to library and other scholarly resources at Cornell; and other, informal, academic assistance as may be needed. The visiting fellow will be hosted by the Sage School of Philosophy at Cornell.

The Department of Languages, Literatures, and Cultures at the University of Richmond invites applications for a full-time, one-year visiting assistant professor position in Russian, Eurasian, and Eastern European Studies (RSST), beginning in August 2024. This is a non-tenure track appointment, annually renewable for up to three years, contingent upon performance, budget, and continued need. We seek candidates with a strong commitment to high-quality undergraduate education who will also enhance the scholarly and creative opportunities provided by our program. The area of specialization is open; PhD required. The teaching load is 6 classes over two semesters.

The Martin Roth Initiative has announced a call for applications for “Temporary Relocation to Germany for Artists and Cultural Actors at Risk 2024.” The initiative allows for artists and cultural actors at risk to temporarily relocate to Germany with the assistance of a host cultural institution.

The program provides a scholarship to applicants for up to 15 months. The Martin Roth Initiative also assists with the relocation visa process and provides applicants with psychosocial support, language courses, trainings, and networking activities.

Applications for the program must be submitted by host organizations. Host organizations can be cultural institutions or collectives (museums, theaters, festivals, etc.) and other socially relevant organizations that are based in Germany.

Applications are due on April 15, 2024.
