Luis Betancourt Montenegro, coordinator of the Grupo de investigacion amazonica (GRIAM), explained that the Yapacana National Park, where more than 4,000 people were recently evicted, is the area with the highest concentration of mining deposits, housing between 15,000 and 20,000 people dedicated to illicit activities.
Likewise, he pointed out that there is also a considerable presence of garimpeiros at the sources of the Orinoco River, as well as in the Autana and Atures municipalities, although on a smaller scale and with extraction of minerals other than gold.
