⚠️🇻🇪🇺🇸 Former senator, Marco Rubio stated that the Trump Administration does not recognize the legitimacy of the Venezuelan regime and that any contact with authorities who today exercise control in the country responds solely to operational criteria, not to political endorsement. He said this in an interview with ABC News, when asked if Washington considers Delcy Rodríguez as the legitimate president of Venezuela.
Rubio was emphatic in pointing out that the Venezuelan regime "is not legitimate by choice" and recalled that this position is not exclusive to the United States, but is shared by nearly 60 countries, including the European Union. In that context, he explained that international recognition can only arise from a real transition and authentic elections, conditions that have not been met in Venezuela.
The senator clarified that, even without recognizing the regime as legitimate, the United States has had to interact with those who held control of key infrastructures, such as airports, to carry out specific actions, including deportation flights of migrants. "That's very different from recognizing their legitimacy," he stressed.
Rubio also questioned the use of the term "president" to refer to Nicolás Maduro, whom he described as an illegitimate ruler and recalled that he also faces drug trafficking charges in the United States. "He was not the head of state. He was not, and we're not the only ones who say it," he insisted, noting that even previous administrations maintained the same position.
Regarding recent contacts between Washington and Delcy Rodríguez, who promised cooperation after Maduro's capture, Rubio avoided giving value to the public messages issued from Caracas. He assured that the United States will evaluate the facts and not the rhetoric. "We're not going to judge by what's said in press conferences. We want to see actions," he said, referring to the context of tension generated after the arrest of the former Venezuelan dictator and his transfer to New York.
