⚠️🇻🇪 Voluntad Popular alerted on Monday on social media that some extortionists are seeking to profit from the mobile messaging app WhatsApp in the wake of the tragedy of political prisoners in Venezuela.

"From Voluntad Popular (VP), we alert that there have been several reports of activist brothers being extorted, after receiving messages falsely claiming that they appear on supposed lists of relatives of political prisoners.

These people even pose as officials of the Scientific, Criminal and Forensic Investigations Corps (Cicpc), sending fake IDs and demanding money under the pretext of delivering medical supplies or aid for detainees.

We categorically reject this criminal practice that exploits the pain, anguish, and despair of relatives of political prisoners, who today continue to wait for the release of their loved ones, in order to commit crimes. This is a cruel form of violence.

We demand that the competent authorities conduct an immediate investigation to identify and stop those behind these extortions, which occur in a context where the absence of justice facilitates this type of crime.

We call on all people to remain vigilant, not to hand over money, and to report any attempt at extortion. We will not allow them to profit from the suffering of those who have already been victims of persecution."

🇻🇪✝ The mother of journalist Ramón Centeno, who was released from prison on January 14 after spending four years detained in Venezuela, has died, the National Union of Press Workers of Venezuela (SNTP) reported on Tuesday.

“It is with great sadness that we inform you of the passing of Mrs. Omaira Navas, mother of our colleague and friend Ramón Centeno, on January 27. We extend our deepest condolences to Ramón and his entire family. May Omaira rest in peace,”

the organization wrote on its social media accounts.

Centeno, unjustly detained for four years, suffered a serious car accident that resulted in fractures to his hip and femur. During his imprisonment, he did not receive adequate medical attention, which aggravated his injuries and transformed a treatable fracture into a chronic condition that now seriously compromises his ability to walk again.
