🇻🇪 Zuliano leader Víctor Borjas Albornoz, a member of Voluntad Popular, was released from prison this Sunday after being detained arbitrarily for more than a year, according to confirmed by political sources and human rights organizations. Borjas was held in the Tocorón prison, one of the most dangerous penitentiary centers in the country.

Upon arriving at his home in Zulia state, Borjas had an emotional reunion with his family: he entered disguised in a giant stuffed animal, surprising his two young daughters after more than a year of absence.

His detention occurred on January 9, 2025, when officials from the General Directorate of Military Counterintelligence (DGCIM) arrested him in Maracaibo, Zulia state. At that time, Borjas was participating in a protest in defense of Edmundo González Urrutia's victory in the presidential elections of July 28, 2024.

The Inter-American Commission on Human Rights (IACHR) had granted precautionary measures in his favor on January 26, 2025, considering that he faced a situation of "gravity and urgency" with a risk of suffering irreparable damage to his life and personal integrity. In its resolution, the IACHR demanded that the Venezuelan State officially confirm whether Borjas was in state custody, report on his procedural situation, and guarantee contact with family and lawyers. However, to date, there have been no significant advances in the implementation of these measures.
