🇻🇪 CEV calls for “measures of grace” to free political prisoners in the context of the canonization of José Gregorio Hernández and Carmen Rendiles

The Venezuelan Episcopal Conference (CEV) urged Nicolás Maduro's government to enact “measures of grace” that allow the release of political prisoners, in the context of the upcoming canonization of José Gregorio Hernández and Mother Carmen Rendiles, the first Venezuelan saints to be inscribed in the universal calendar of the Church.

In their pastoral message, the bishops stated that this event “cannot be reduced to external gestures of jubilation,” but must inspire a deep reflection on the present and future of the country, in light of the virtues of both saints.

“If Dr. Hernández and Mother Carmen Rendiles were artisans of peace and hope, their canonization must lead us to work decisively so that this peace is present in the hearts of all Venezuelans,” the document states.

The CEV warned that “belligerent” speeches and actions or attempts to politically appropriate the figure of the saints “overshadow the profound meaning of the canonization.”
