El Colombiano: Petro knew about the privatization of Monómeros for $300 million but changed his mind

The future of Monómeros, Colombia's largest fertilizer producer, hangs in the balance of diplomatic and commercial matters. The company, owned by Venezuelan state-owned Pequiven, was put up for sale by the government of Nicolás Maduro, who is seeking to avoid any possible sanctions that the administration of Donald Trump could impose again after taking office in January.

The transaction could have major political and economic implications in the region, where Monómeros controls 40% of the fertilizer market and employs more than 400 people.

Since August, reports of questionable financial transactions towards a company in Hong Kong have emerged, according to investigations by the newspaper El Colombiano.

El Colombiano revealed that the agreement reached, valued at around 300 million dollars, was practically closed. However, a few days after the conclusion of the sale, President Petro issued a surprising statement on X, addressed to Maduro and Alex Saab, Minister of Industry and National Production, and negotiator of the sale, declaring his opposition to the operation.

In his message, Petro said that the privatization of Monómeros would increase the prices of fertilizers for Colombian farmers and generate dependence on the national agricultural sector.

🇨🇴🇻🇪Monómeros executive resigns after privatization controversy: “The Colombian government was not involved”

The conflict between Colombia and Venezuela over the privatization of Monómeros continues with the resignation of Rodrigo Ramírez, director of the company that is a key subsidiary of the Venezuelan state-owned Petróleos de Venezuela SA (Pdvsa) based in Barranquilla, Colombia.

Ramírez, through the social network X, expressed his disagreement with the privatization promoted by the Venezuelan government and announced the withdrawal of Colombia from the company's board of directors.

Colombian President Gustavo Petro has expressed his opposition to the sale of the company. In a recent letter to Nicolás Maduro, the president expressed his “respectful and attentive opposition” to the decision of Venezuela’s Minister of Industry and National Production, Alex Saab, to move forward with the sale of Monómeros.

Petro stressed that the company is crucial for food security in both countries, as it ensures the production of agricultural inputs such as urea, vital for land productivity in Colombia and Venezuela.
