Rush to leave Venezuela shoots up airfare prices by 300%
It is increasingly difficult, and much more expensive, to find a flight that leaves Venezuela.
President Nicolás Maduro canceled flights to some countries that questioned his self-proclaimed electoral victory, including two that in normal times are important hubs for travelers heading to or from Venezuela: Panama, the operations center of Copa Airlines, and Dominican Republic. Peru is also banned.
The only regional flight option left to leave the country is Bogotá, but prices have skyrocketed. A trip in two weeks from Caracas to the Colombian capital, which lasts about two hours, used to cost less than $200, but last Friday the price exceeded $800, Bloomberg reported.
The lack of alternatives is leaving Venezuelans who live abroad and who returned to vote in the July 28 elections stranded. Many hoped that a possible change in government would bring about a transformation of the country that would allow them to return permanently. Now, some say they are desperate to leave and fear they will be trapped.

“I spoke with Lula 15 days ago. But I am in regular contact with Celso Amorim and with Foreign Minister Mauro Vieira,” Maduro said during an interview at Miraflores Palace, the seat of the Venezuelan government.
“Presidents Lula, Petro, and Obrador are working together to ensure that Venezuela is respected. So that the United States doesn’t do what it’s doing. They issued a very good communiqué, very good. I congratulate Presidents Petro, López Obrador, and Lula. Thank you very much, on behalf of all of Venezuela.”

"Just like the governments of Peru, Argentina, Uruguay, and the United States, the 27 undersigned senators have decided to formally recognize Edmundo González Urrutia as the new president-elect of Venezuela. This recognition underscores the importance of respecting the popular will and strengthening democratic institutions in our region.
The evidence of his victory is overwhelming, as demonstrated by the records that the world has had access to. It is crucial to respect the democratic will of the Venezuelan people, who decided through the ballot box to end Nicolás Maduro's dictatorship.
The senators express our unwavering commitment to democratic values, freedom, and the defense of human rights."
