The Chechen people have been fighting for freedom for over 300 years, resisting Russian occupation alongside other peoples of the Caucasus.
In the 20th century, attempts to restore statehood never ceased: the Mountain Republic (1918) and the independent Chechen state (1920) emerged. But brutal repression continued.
On February 23, 1944, the Soviet authorities deported the entire Chechen people to Central Asia.
Tens of thousands died, and those who survived were able to return to their homeland only after 13 years
of exile.
In the early 1990s, during the collapse of the USSR, large congresses of the Chechen people were held in Grozny, where the fate of statehood was decided.
On September 6, 1991, Chechnya declared independence, electing Dzhokhar Dudayev as president and creating its own state structures. Thousands of people took to the streets of Grozny to defend the right to live in a free country.
However, soon the years of bloody struggle began.
December 1994 marked the beginning of Russian aggression, which brought destruction, torture, killings, and terror to Chechnya.
Today, despite repression, persecution, and occupation, the spirit of free Chechens remains unbroken.
True Chechens have been fighting the Russian aggressor on the side of Ukraine in the Russian-Ukrainian war since 2014.
