MANY HANDS MAKE LIGHT WORK.
In economics, "The Network Effect" refers to the idea that the utility of a good or service often increases in proportion to the number of people who also make use of that good or service.
This principle applies to those around you as well. No man is an island, and while self-sufficiency is certainly respectable, it isn't always possible.
The goal of the Midwest Network is to encourage the growth of personal and professional relationships between like-minded members. And, with your help, we can create strong economic and social bonds that will not only benefit the individual, but also the network, and even future generations.

Compression is something all of us face nowadays. Competing priorities, managed expectations, and tightening of belts--the compression of our time horizon from next year to next week--or even just the next few hours--has made us smaller, less ambitious, and less sure of ourselves.
That's why it's more important than ever to make the time to expand. Expand our bodies and minds in self-improvement. Expand our generosity and concern for family and friends. And expand our vision and ambition for the future, to dream the really important dreams, and then to make the time to start working to make them a reality.
During a recent Planning Retreat conducted by the Midwest Network, regional leaders from several states discussed plans for the future of their communities. We look forward to seeing their projects, social, political, economic, and legal, bear fruit over the coming year.
It's high time you joined us--Expand your horizons. Join the Midwest Network.

"MAY YOUR HOME ALWAYS BE TOO SMALL TO HOLD ALL OF YOUR FRIENDS" - IRISH PROVERB
Members of the Midwest Network recently enjoyed a weekend with friends and family, including a brisk autumn hike and a night of singing Irish songs at a local Irish pub.
It's important to spend time outdoors, away from the problems facing us, to recenter yourself and focus on what really matters.
And likewise, it is important to be seen in public, even if our presence can't be advertised or recorded without the good ol' face blur tool.
The members of the Midwest Network were the main attraction at the pub that night, leading their friends and even the other customers in a round of traditional music, and leaving a fantastic impression on the staff and owner - and we intend to return!

Thrift is the really romantic thing; economy is more romantic than extravagance... thrift is poetic because it is creative; waste is unpoetic because it is waste... if a man could undertake to make use of all the things in his dustbin, he would be a broader genius than Shakespeare.

Members of the Midwest Network came together to help a fellow member butcher and process a steer. The children kept each other entertained, with the older ones looking after the young ones, while the men processed enough meat to feed all of their families through the coming winter.

Wandering the dark and misty woods of modern politics takes a toll on one's morale. There is a perverse part in all of us that whispers that there's no hope, nothing we do matters, and we should just lie down and accept our fate quietly. Why should you take risks or exert yourself, the Voice asks, if the result is going to be the same anyway?
The truth is, of course, that the Voice is a liar, and will say anything at all to keep you from doing the one thing that will offer a hope of escape--that is, to keep walking, keep moving forward, keep you wits about you and keep searching for the path that will put you back on the right road.
It's easy to let chaos and contention distract you from your essential work or worse, to become demoralized into believing your work has no value.
We know better--in uncertain times, the only thing to do is keep putting one foot in front of the other. We hope you will join us.

It is natural to feel demoralized in the wake of setbacks, to feel that no matter how hard you try, nothing ever lasts the test of time. Imagine how our forefathers felt! In the endless wars of succession and conquest in Europe, on the hostile trails of the American West, or lost in the endless desert of blue ocean in the South Seas, our ancestors fought a constant battle for survival, to maintain what little they had, and to expand, often by bloody inches, what they had generation after generation. Can we expect to suffer less, to struggle less, to risk less than those who fought back the Turks at Vienna, who conquered India and Africa, who suffered hunger and thirst, snow and cyclone, White Reaver and Red Savage?
All too often we stand mesmerized by the seeming impossibility of a task instead of putting our shoulder to the wheel. Now is the time for every man to rise and be counted.
Join us today, and lend your strength in the struggle to come!

Members of the Midwest Network process deadwood into fence posts
When preparing a new fence post or telephone pole, the wood has to be treated to prevent decay or infestation by parasites, otherwise the poles will rot clean through.
Unlike pupose-shaped hardwood Telephone poles, these homemade posts from treefall, like those pictured above, need to be cut down to size and have the sapwood removed. They are then sealed by blowtorch and copper salts to complete the weatherizing process.
People are the same way. Men, like fenceposts, must be upright, resilient, resistant to disease or decay, and capable of bearing their load in all sorts of weather. In the same way as these logs have the pulpy sapwood stripped down and burned away, so too must we strip and burn away all weakness, all distraction, all excess, and all vice, until we are all as strong, weathered, and upright as possible.
We look forward to you joining us on that journey!
