When your gas storage hits a 17-year low, your storage targets are already unreachable, and your main river is too shallow to float a barge, "energy transition" wasn't a policy — it was a countdown to a cold, expensive winter.
The Ministry of Cartographic Truth has resolved a persistent geographic ambiguity: The Warmonger In Chief posted a map on Truth Social labelling the Strait of Hormuz "New U.S. Territory," a body of water located entirely within the territorial waters of Iran and Oman, thousands of miles from the United States, and — in a detail the map omits — one that Iran continues to blockade with mines and drones, insisting "the Strait of Hormuz has been Iranian, is Iranian, and will remain Iranian." In the same breath, the Donald Copperfield declared the waterway "open and operating" with "all water mines removed or detonated," while announcing "no talks or conversations going on" and the naval blockade "in full force" — a set of claims so mutually contradictory they achieve a kind of Orwellian perfection: the strait is simultaneously American and Iranian, open and blockaded, at peace and under siege.
When you cannot open a strait, you declare you own it — the map becomes the territory, the announcement becomes the victory, and the war ends not with a treaty but with a redrawn border nobody else recognises.

In a development that will surprise absolutely nobody except the people whose job it was to see it coming, ‘Scrooge’ Bessent — with 30-year yields at a 25-year high and threatening to blow out further — panicked and announced the Treasury will "at least double" the size of its long-end buyback operations from $2 billion to $4 billion per operation, thereby resolving the market's favourite years-long debate about whether these buybacks were "soft QE" by confirming they were, in fact, QE all along, just wearing a false moustache and calling itself "liquidity support." The official justification — that the Treasury simply wishes to provide "greater liquidity support in longer-dated sectors where there is consistent strong sponsorship" — is a masterpiece of bureaucratic nonsense, since a sector with "strong sponsorship" is by definition one that doesn't need liquidity support.

When the Treasury doubles its "not-QE" buybacks the same week debt hits $40 trillion, gold doesn't need a press release to translate it — QE by any other name still spends the same, and the Eternal Bullion just read the memo first.

In a display of fiscal choreography worthy of its own Netflix special, Bessent's morning panic — doubling long-end buybacks mere hours before the 20-year auction — accomplished precisely one thing: it ensured the auction priced at the second highest yield in the tenor's history rather than the first, a distinction roughly as reassuring as being told your parachute mostly opened. The auction priced at 5.204%, up from July's 5.163%, tailing the When Issued by 0.5bps.

The bid-to-cover of 2.53 — the lowest since February and one of the worst on record — meaning that even after the Treasury emergency-intervened to suppress yields by 8bps, demand was still lousy enough to require the dealers to sweep up 12.5% of what nobody wanted. The internals writhed accordingly: foreign buyers collapsed to 62.9% while Directs surged to 24.6%, a suspicious see-saw pattern
When the Treasury has to panic-double its "not-QE" buybacks just to make its 20-year auction the second-worst on record instead of the worst, the intervention isn't a solution — it's a countdown timer with better PR.

The July FOMC minutes arrived with a hawkish tilt so carefully curated it might as well have come with a Warsh-ington seal of approval: participants judged that inflation risks were "skewed to the upside," many agreed a hike would likely be needed if inflation didn't decline, and — in a development anyone with a modicum of common sense has been forecasting for months while the consensus laughed — several members explicitly flagged AI investment as having a broader effect on prices. That's right: the Fed has now officially joined the growing list of institutions discovering that pouring trillions into data centres that consume oceans of electricity, water, and memory chips might, against all expert expectation, be inflationary. The comedy, of course, is the timing — the minutes are backward-looking, describe a meeting held before July's weak jobs and retail data.

The Fed finally admits AI is inflationary in the same week the Treasury launches QE-lite to stop yields from exploding, the "upside inflation risk" isn't a forecast — it's a confession arriving eighteen months late.
Dubai sacrifices the neutral-financial-hub reputation it spent decades building, and every Russian, Chinese, and Indian investor quietly notes that their capital, too, could someday become a bargaining chip. Once the commercial bridge burns, only the military is left speaking between nations.
The Ministry of Peaceful Commerce has announced a decisive economic measure: the UAE has suspended all trade, commercial exchanges, and financial transactions with Iran — severing a $28 billion annual relationship and Dubai's decades-old role as Iran's commercial doorway to the world — after accusing Tehran of firing two ballistic missiles toward Emirati waters, a charge Iran denies but which, in the cheerful logic of retaliation, hardly matters anymore. The measure is presented as a peaceful alternative to conflict, which is precisely what makes it so ominous: economic strangulation is not a substitute for war but historically one of its final rehearsals, as Athens learned with the Megarian Decree before the Peloponnesian War, Napoleon learned with the Continental System, and Washington learned by cutting Japan's oil before Pearl Harbor.

The Ministry of Contained Inflation has a minor supply-chain clarification for anyone still watching the wrong number: while the political class fixates on crude and gasoline because those are the prices that appear in headlines, US retail diesel has quietly reached roughly $5.45 a gallon and the diesel crack spread has broken above $100 per barrel for the first time in history — a record the Ministry would prefer you not connect to the fuel that moves every truck, tractor, train, ship, and food delivery in the economy. Diesel is the lifeblood of everything waiting for you when you arrive, and it is being simultaneously strangled from three directions: the Iran war disrupting Middle Eastern refining, Ukrainian drones dismantling Russia's, and China curtailing exports while US distillate inventories sit at their lowest seasonal level in decades. The refineries required to fix this take years and billions that governments spent a decade discouraging in the name of a transition that left zero spare capacity.
When the fuel that moves everything hits a record while the government insists inflation is contained, the election won't be decided by ideology — it will be decided at the diesel pump, one $5.45 gallon at a time.

Could a global sovereign debt crisis trigger the next great commodity bull market? 🏛💥🥇
The Macro Butler is back on Piggo’s Trading Desk for a deep dive into the single most underpriced risk in markets today — and the assets built to survive it. He connects the entire chain, from the bond market to the barrel:
🏛 The sovereign debt crisis has begun — surging Treasury yields, Japan and Europe drowning in debt, and the uncomfortable truth that “endless borrowing” always ends the same way.
🥇 From bonds to gold, silver, and hard assets — why capital is already migrating out of paper promises and into the things that can’t be printed, defaulted on, or frozen with a keystroke.
🌾 Wheat, fertilizer, and the coming food-inflation squeeze — the agricultural chokepoints the consensus keeps ignoring.
🛢 Oil, diesel, and winter inflation — with the diesel crack spread at record highs, the energy story is only getting started.
💧 Water scarcity, data centers, and preparing for chaos — because the smart money prepares; it doesn’t fight the cycle.
As The Macro Butler puts it: Prepare, don’t fight.
Just the macro playbook history keeps validating.

Could a global sovereign debt crisis trigger the next great commodity bull market? 🏛️💥🥇
Japan's "reflation" is powered by a weak yen, expensive oil, and the rising cost of everything — a war tax arriving by tanker, dressed up as a policy victory, with more shortages still to come.
Japan's July CPI delivered exactly what the BOJ needed to justify the rate hike it has been theatrically threatening for two years: headline inflation rose to 1.9% from 1.6%, core-core ticked up to 1.9%, and Bloomberg Economics now confidently pencils in a hike to 1.25% in October — a monetary tightening so aggressive it will bring Japan's policy rate to a level the rest of the developed world abandoned in 2008. The comedy, as always, lives in the fine print: the "acceleration" was driven almost entirely by a weaker yen and the March-June oil spike pushing up input costs on such thrilling categories as laptops, facial tissues, toilet paper, and plastic bags — meaning Japan's inflation is not the healthy demand-driven variety the BOJ pretends to be targeting, but the imported war-tax variety arriving via a currency the BOJ itself keeps too weak by refusing to hike fast enough.
