A snail-inspired robot has been developed by scientists at Cornell University to potentially scoop up microplastics from the surfaces of oceans, seas, and lakes. The robot is inspired by the undulating motion of a snail's foot, which drives water surface flow and sucks in floating food particles.

The prototype uses a 3D-printed carpet-like sheet that undulates and a helical structure to generate waves on the water's surface, effectively collecting microplastics.🫡

The robot's open fluid-pumping system is efficient, requiring only 5 volts of electricity, and can be scaled up for real-world applications.👌
