31 years ago today, on December 31, 1994, Russia launched its New Year’s Eve assault on Grozny

Russian pigs began the assault expecting a swift, symbolic victory. Instead, armored columns rolled straight into a meticulously prepared urban trap. Chechen fighters, outnumbered and outgunned, dismantled the advancing force street by street knocking out the tanks of the Russian occupiers, isolating units, and turning the city into a graveyard for Moscow’s overconfidence. What was meant to be a show of power became one of the most humiliating defeats in modern military history, marking the opening chapter of the First Chechen War and a lasting reminder that occupation is never as simple as maps and columns suggest.
