Christian churches in Suwaida are unable to hold their traditional Christmas celebrations this year due to the takeover of parts of the governorate by Druze militias associated with Hikmat al-Hijri and supported by Israel. Clergy members have stated that the security situation created by these armed groups has made public celebrations impossible, preventing churches from hosting Christmas receptions or welcoming worshippers. The area remains under militia control following the violence that occurred last June. As a result, observances will be limited to prayers only. Father Tony al-Batrus of St. Philip’s Church in Shahba mentioned that prayers would be dedicated to those “standing guard on the front lines,” highlighting the challenges faced by Christian communities in the presence of militias.
