FLASH FLOODS KILL AT LEAST 21 IN SAFI, MOROCCO
At least 21 people were killed in flash floods triggered by torrential rains on Sunday in Morocco's Atlantic coastal province of Safi, 330 kilometres south of Rabat, Moroccan authorities said. The floods injured over 40 people. Morocco is experiencing heavy rain across multiple regions, with floods in Tanger and Tetouan.
Search and Rescue operations are still ongoing and the death toll is expected to rise.
The extreme rainfall (~70-100mm in hours) overwhelmed urban drainage systems. Critics, including locals on social media, point to chronic government neglect of flood infrastructureโpoorly maintained sewers and stormwater channelsโexacerbating the disaster despite prior weather alerts. Morocco has faced recurring deadly floods linked to inadequate urban planning and maintenance.
