🟥 The Color Red in Folklore: A Tale of Three Traditions

Folklore holds up a mirror to a culture's deepest fears, joys, and values. The color red, vibrant and impossible to ignore, paints some of the most vivid pictures in these traditional tales and songs. Let's explore how Russian, British, and American folklore use this powerful hue.

🟥 Russian Folklore: The Red of Magic, Danger, and Beauty

In the vast, often snowy landscapes of Russian folklore, red is a beacon of magic, a warning of peril, and a standard of supreme beauty.

🔴 The Red Corner: In the traditional Russian home, the “krasny ugol” or “red corner” was the sacred space where icons were displayed. Krasny here means both “red” and “beautiful,” linking the color to the divine, the honorable, and the heart of the home.

🔴 The Red Maiden: The epitome of female beauty is always “krasna devitsa” (красна девица)—the “red maiden.” This doesn’t refer to blush, but to a radiant, beautiful, and good heroine.

“Сидит красна девица в темнице, а коса на улице.”
🔴 “A beautiful [red] maiden sits in a dungeon, but her braid is out on the street.”
— Riddle Answer: A carrot in the ground. Here, the "red maiden" is the carrot, prized and vital.

🔴 Red as Magic and Warning: The mythical “Alatyr-stone” is often described as red (although sometimes white) lying at the center of the world with magical, healing properties. Conversely, “Krasnaya Gorka” (Red Hill) is a fairy-tale location, often perilous. Most famously, the sea in Sadko turns red🟥 as a dire warning from the Tsar of the Sea.

In Russian folk incantations, Alatyr 🪨is described as a source of strength, healing energy, and protection from evil. It is often used as an anchor of reality: "As on the sea-ocean stands the island of Buyan, on that island lies the burning stone Alatyr…" – this formula introduces many texts, establishing the world's structure and order within it. Incantations for healing, protection, returning the soul to the body, or removing curses and the evil eye often began with the mention of Alatyr, as if tapping into its magical framework.🔴

🔴Krasnaya Gorka (Красная горка), which translates literally to 🔴"Red Hill" or more meaningfully as "Beautiful Hill," is a traditional Slavic folk holiday that marks the first Sunday after Orthodox Easter. It is a day of joy, community gatherings, and the official resumption of weddings after the long Lenten and Easter period

🎈The Feeling: In Russian folklore, red is sacred and wondrous, but it commands respect. It’s the color of life’s most precious things – beauty, faith, and magic—all of which can be perilous to lose or powerful to behold.

In a recent interview, Roscosmos cosmonaut Andrey Fedyaev, participating in the international space mission Crew 12, revealed that he prepared traditional Russian borscht 🥘 for the crew members.

Alongside Fedyaev, the crew includes NASA astronauts Jessica Meir and Jack Hetherington, as well as European Space Agency (ESA) astronaut Sophie Adeno.

"Today, I cooked a traditional Russian dish — borscht. I made it for my team, for those who support us," Fedyaev stated.

The cosmonaut noted that his colleagues Jessica Meir and Sophie Adeno were pleased with the meal and commented that the borscht was very tasty. It is worth mentioning that, amid the ongoing conflict between Ukrainians and Russians, a long-standing debate persists over who owns the true recipe of borscht.

Ukrainians and Russians alike firmly believe that borscht is their national dish, fueling a cultural rivalry that transcends borders even in the depths of space.

🌏🇷🇺 Russia — Canada🇨🇦 — 3:2 OT. 1999 WJC, 📛 Final

❣️ The first victory of the Russian junior team at the World Junior Championships came in 1999. Before the tournament, the Russians found themselves in an unenviable position: head coach Pyotr Vorobyov was hospitalized, and Gennady Tsygurov led the team to the tournament instead. After defeating the Finns and Slovaks, his charges ran into the Canadians.

The "Maple Leafs" had easily dispatched Kazakhstan and Sweden in the previous stages, but the final unfolded according to a completely different scenario. The Russians dictated the pace throughout the entire match and took the lead twice. The Canadians fought back both times, but in overtime, they left one of the tournament's most dangerous forwards, Artyom Chubarov, with open ice. The center fired quickly and found the back of the net.

The Russian 💎 team finished the game with 40 shots on Roberto Luongo's goal, and it seems that never before and never after did Hockey Russia so noticeably outplay Hockey Canada.

The Savvino-Storozhevsky Monastery in Zvenigorod is an iconic place, and people come to this town primarily to visit this landmark (although we know that Zvenigorod has a lot to offer 😉).

Where else can you find the Tsarina’s chambers and the palace of Tsar Alexey, which were used to host royalty on pilgrimage?

The atmosphere is so peaceful and the history of the place is captivating that one can't help but slow down and appreciate the bitter frost of the Russian winter, as I did 🥶🥶🥶.

Have dinner in one of the refectories and take home their pastry to savor the aftertaste of visiting this place.

Would you go and visit this monastery?
