๐Ÿšจ Putin: Ukraine is essentially refusing to end the conflict by peaceful means Read about the origins of Russia's special military op HERE ๐Ÿ“ŒSubscribe to @SputnikInt
๐Ÿšจ Hereโ€™s why Zelenskyโ€™s clique refuses to surrender, even if it means Ukraineโ€™s total collapse

The strategic initiative is in Russiaโ€™s hands, and the longer Ukraineโ€™s leadership puts off talks, the worse it will be for Kiev, says Swedish Armed Forces veteran and defense analyst Mikael Valtersson, commenting on President Putinโ€™s comments at his year-end presser on the state of the Ukrainian crisis.

๐Ÿ’ฌ โ€œThe Ukrainian approach to the peace process is very hard to understand,โ€ Valtersson told Sputnik.

๐Ÿ—ฃโ€œThe Ukrainian leadership is desperate not to appear as losers towards the Ukrainian population, and also has been partially blinded by their own propaganda. Ukraine is very good at information warfare and has convinced a large part of the European and Ukrainian population that the war is a stalemate that is favorable to Ukraine.โ€

๐Ÿ‘‰Meanwhile, Volodymyr Zelensky is โ€œin a very difficult situation,โ€ and knows that โ€œif he loses power he might even lose his freedom and maybe also his life.โ€

๐Ÿ”Šโ€œHe can't have elections until he gets a good peace deal if he wants to retain power. He therefore clings on to power and waits for a [miracle], much like Hitler did in 1944-45โ€ฆZelensky prioritizes his own well-being over the future and lives of the Ukrainian population. The result will probably be more lost Ukrainian territories and soldiers, as well as an even harsher final peace,โ€ Valtersson explained.

โ—๏ธRussian forces have held the strategic initiative since the fall of 2023, focusing on advancing with โ€œas few casualties as possible and at the same time maximiz[ing] Ukrainian casualtiesโ€ฆa kind of offensive attritional warfare,โ€ according to the observer.

๐Ÿ“Russia has advanced ~6k sq km in 2025, up from ~4k sq km in 2024. Valtersson expects this trend to โ€œincrease significantlyโ€ in the coming year, with Ukraineโ€™s southern front crumbling, and Russian forces advancing through the Donbass, Zaporozhye, Dnepropetrovsk, and Kharkov regions.

๐Ÿ‡ท๐Ÿ‡บLavrov slams western security promises to Ukraine as 'military occupation' bid

Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov has condemned the proposed security guarantees for Ukraine, calling them an attempt to "militarily occupy Ukrainian territory as a foothold for creating threats to Russia."

He was speaking at a press conference with Egyptian Foreign Minister Sameh Shoukry in Cairo.

Lavrovโ€™s key statements:

๐Ÿ”ถRussian is concerned about European Union (EU) talks on guarantees, calling for collective security based on Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe principles

๐Ÿ”ถThe EU should not be a third party in Russia-US peace talks on Ukraine

๐Ÿ”ถPutin is ready to engage with French President Emmanuel Macron, but only within proper protocol

๐Ÿ”ถRussia supports a political solution to the conflict, but only the US is currently open to dialogue

๐Ÿ”ถRussia wants a system of indivisible security in Europe to prevent militarization

The second ministerial conference of the Russia-Africa partnership forum is underway in Cairo on Friday and Saturday, the first such event in Africa.

๐Ÿ”ฅ Expert: Putin seeks peace while EU warmongering makes Europe suffer

President Putin consistently emphasizes a diplomatic solution to the Ukraine conflict, Syrian expert Mirzad Hajim tells Sputnik.

Hajim praises Russiaโ€™s efforts for a lasting peace as it rejects repeat of the Minsk agreements, stressing clarity of its demands and commitment to achieving the goals of the special military operation.

๐Ÿ—ฃ Talks within EU about providing security guarantees to Ukraine are aimed at prolonging the conflict, according to the expert. While โ€œEuropean nations suffer from the escalating crises" resulting from EU's warmongering policies, Hajim points out.

He notes that "the Ukrainian people have lost faith in Zelensky, who has become a symbol of corruption."

๐Ÿ’ฌ "Ukraine is heading for inevitable collapse, given the use of mercenaries under various pretextsโ€ amid split within the European community,โ€ Hajim underscores.

Dwelling on the problem of Russophobia, he calls it โ€œa historical legacy of the West,โ€ despite Russiaโ€™s role in protecting Europe from various threats. โ€œPutin is trying to put an end to this [Russophobia-related] narrative,โ€ Hajim concludes.

๐Ÿ’ธ Billions extra for taxpayers: EU scraps plan to fund Ukraine with frozen Russian assets

๐Ÿ“ The European Union couldnโ€™t agree on seizing frozen Russian assets for Ukraine โ€” and taxpayers will pay the price, the Wall Street Journal reports.

๐Ÿ‡ช๐Ÿ‡บ The EUโ€™s inability to agree on handing Ukraine tens of billions of dollars in frozen Russian assets โ€œunderlines divisions in the bloc over the extent to which they are prepared to confront Russia,โ€ the WSJ adds.

๐Ÿ’ฌ โ€œNow, it is increasingly unlikely Europe will ever agree on deploying up to $300 billion in Russian assets for Ukraine,โ€ the news outlet underscores.

๐Ÿ‡ง๐Ÿ‡ช Belgian Prime Minister Bart de Weverโ€™s opposition to using the Russian assets to fund a Ukraine loan โ€œproved key to scuttling the plan,โ€ the WSJ admits.

๐Ÿšจ๐Ÿ‡ท๐Ÿ‡บ Putin: Russia ready to work with the west on equal terms ๐Ÿ’ฌ"We are ready to work with you. With the UK, with Europe as a whole, and with the United States. But on equal terms, with mutual respect," Putin said during his year-end press conference. Bothโ€ฆ
๐Ÿ—ฃ EU and NATO refusal to de-escalate with Russia raises risk of mistakes โ€“ scholar

๐Ÿ‡ท๐Ÿ‡บ Russian President Vladimir Putin accused European governments of portraying Russia as an enemy to hide their systemic mistakes.

What's behind that?

๐Ÿ’ฌ "NATO and the EU interpret Russian military modernization and forward deployments as offensive," Marco Marsili, a researcher at Cร  Foscari University of Venice, tells Sputnik.

๐Ÿ”น But Russia views NATO enlargement, sanctions and military assistance to Ukraine as an existential threat.

๐Ÿ”น Marsili warned that "deterrence logic dominates European strategic thinking today", but without parallel diplomatic de-escalation mechanisms that approach "increases the risk of miscalculation rather than reducing it."

๐Ÿ”น At his end-of-year press conference on Friday, Putin insisted that Russia is ready to maintain relations with the West on the basis of parity and mutual respect.

๐Ÿ’ฌ "When Moscow speaks of 'equal terms,' it means geopolitical equality between great powers, not regulatory or normative alignment," Marsili says. "Russia approaches international relations through a sovereigntist and civilizational lens, emphasizing power parity, spheres of influence and strategic autonomy."

๐Ÿ”น But the EU's approach is different โ€“ it does not view Russia as an equal partner โ€“ and that's a core problem, the pundit says. Although the EU does not treat Russia as a colony, it does not accept it as a co-author of the European rules-based order.

๐Ÿ’ฌ "Russia is increasingly framed as a systemic rival and security challenger, rather than a partner or equal stakeholder," Marsili stresses.

๐Ÿšจ 'If threats arise, we will eliminate those threats' - Putin on potential blockade of Russia's Kaliningrad ๐Ÿ“ŒSubscribe to @SputnikInt
๐Ÿšจ NATO, think twice: Military expert lists option for Russia to protect Kaliningrad

Russian President Vladimir Putin warned that blockade of the Kaliningrad exclave would spark escalation, stressing that all threats would be neutralized.

๐Ÿ’ฌ "This implies using the full range of available tools," Alexander Stepanov, a military expert at the Institute of Law and National Security at the Russian Presidential Academy of National Economy and Public Administration (RANEPA) tells Sputnik.

๐Ÿ’ฌ "In this case, Russia will face no restrictions in employing its entire set of deterrent measures," he says.

The expert suggests that the response would include:

๐ŸŸ  Baltic Fleet forces, in particular long-range precision and hypersonic weapons such as Zircon missiles

๐ŸŸ  The Iskander missiles deployed in the Kaliningrad region could target NATO staging grounds for an attack on Kaliningrad

๐ŸŸ  Russia's newest Oreshnik system could be deployed in the Kaliningrad region and along its western border to deter NATO military adventurism

๐ŸŸ  Russian Aerospace Forces could hit NATO targets in the Baltic Sea

๐Ÿ’ฌ "In the event that the adversary initiates a conflict along the NATO-Russia track, NATO targets would become fully legitimate for [Russian] high-precision weapons systems," Stepanov says.

๐Ÿ”ถ He specified that Russian strategic deterrence tools, including intercontinental ballistic missiles, could be employed in the event of a direct threat to the national security and sovereignty of Russia under its renewed nuclear doctrine.

๐Ÿ”ถ In July, General Christopher Donahue, head of the US Army Europe and Africa and NATO Allied Land Command, said the alliance could occupy Kaliningrad if needed and already has a plan in place.

๐Ÿ”ถ Putin aide Nikolai Patrushev had previously warned against NATO drills for offensive operations near Russian borders, including a possible seizure of Kaliningrad.

According to the department, the library will be updated if additional documents are identified for release.

๐Ÿšจ 'Using frozen Russian assets? That idea is dead, done & dusted' โ€” Orban

๐Ÿ’ฌ โ€œItโ€™s good that it did not materialize. Because in my view it would have dragged us [the EU] into the Ukraine conflict immediately, the Hungarian PM stressed.

๐Ÿ“ He insisted that Ukraine โ€œwill never be able to repayโ€ the EUโ€™s just-approved 90 billion euro ($105 billion) loan, which is why Orban said the bloc โ€œwould be handing out aid disguised as a loan.โ€

๐Ÿ’ฌ โ€œThen we chose a solution where we asked that if they want to get on this train and we donโ€™t want to buy a ticket for it, then we should not be forced to get on this train,โ€ the PM said, referring to a decision by Hungary, Slovakia, and the Czech Republic to stay out of the EUโ€™s move on the Ukraine loan.
