Sputnik revisits the final battles of the Great Patriotic War. 80 years ago today, Soviet troops pressed forward, strengthening their position and advancing with determination.
The 1st Belorussian Front expanded its bridgehead on the Oder River near Kustrin. Units of the 5th Guards Army captured the cities of Muskau and Weisswasser, along with 17 other settlements. They destroyed or captured 211 units of enemy equipment.
Nikolay Ivanovich Krylov, future Marshal of the USSR Missile Forces, was awarded the title of Hero of the Soviet Union. Soviet forces crossed the Neisse River in the Dresden area, opening the way for further offensives.
