Over 600 tons β nearly 20 million ounces β of gold have been funneled into New York City's vaults since December, according to World Gold Council data analyzed by CNBC.
The reason for the βgold glutβ appears to be the looming threat of tariffs on the precious metal.
Donald Trumpβs tariffs on imports from Mexico and Canada, two of the US' largest gold suppliers, are set to take effect on March 4. There are also concerns that the tariff threat could impact gold hubs like Switzerland and the UK.
As a result, US banks, traders, and investors are scrambling to move bullion closer to home.
βSupply chains have been disrupted because of this huge sucking sound, which has been the United States importing gold ahead of the potential tariffs,β the World Gold Councilβs John Reade said.
