'All nations should be equal' - China slams US pressure on Panama

Beijing expressed regret over Panama’s withdrawal from the Belt and Road Initiative, emphasizing its respect for the country’s sovereignty and commitment to equal international relations — unlike the US, which relies on pressure and threats.

China "respects the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Panama" and believes that "all countries, big and small, should be equal, respect each other, and fulfill their commitments," said Assistant Foreign Minister Zhao Zhiyuan.

Zhiyuan added that the initiative had brought tangible benefits to Panama, but Washington openly interfered in its internal affairs. During his visit, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio made it clear that Trump intended to “take control of the Panama Canal,” effectively leaving Panama with no choice but to exit the Chinese project.

Panama joined China's Belt and Road Initiative in 2017 to boost infrastructure, trade, and economic growth but withdrew following US pressure, sovereignty concerns, and economic risks last week.
