Chinese Stratagems: How to offset US tariffs

Some companies in Chinaโ€™s south are moving production to third countries, as well as seeking alternative markets, The Financial Times reported.

This strategy of offsetting US tariffs is not new, since โ€œa lot of the price-sensitive exports to the US have already been redirected as a result of the first trade war,โ€ Lynn Song, chief economist for Greater China at ING, told the outlet.

He noted that Chinese companies were prompted to start diversifying their trade after Donald Trumpโ€™s first term, which was similarly marked by China tariffs.

A 2024 report by Rhodium Group revealed that Chinaโ€™s direct share of US imports fell by eight percentage points between 2017 and 2023. At the same time, the share of US imports from Vietnam, for example, increased substantially.

The Middle East, such as the United Arab Emirates, Southeast Asia, and Latin America are all increasingly favorable locations for Chinaโ€™s trade shift.

Passing the costs:

Since more sophisticated Chinese exports, like machine parts, are difficult to substitute, the price hikes triggered by production offshoring would raise procurement costs. Simple arithmetic shows that sales prices will rise.

Thus, Trumpโ€™s policies could ultimately backfire, leaving US buyers to absorb the burden of higher costs.

๐Ÿช™No bees โ€“ no honey, crappy work โ€“ no money

Over 100 cultural and media organizations in Ukraine will be forced to get along on a shoestring now that Trump has placed the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) on ice, bemoaned Spanish newspaper.

Most so-called โ€˜independentโ€™ Ukrainian media depended entirely on cash flowing from USAID, the newspaper noted.

According to newspaper, some websites were over 80% US-funded.

Looks like some people will have to tighten their belts.
