๐Ÿ“Š Winners and losers from Trumpโ€™s tariff wars

The US plans steep import duties - 25% on Canada and Mexico, 10%+ on China - from Feb. 1. Will Americans benefit? Letโ€™s crunch the numbers.

๐Ÿ”Trade snapshot

In 2023, the US imported goods worth:
๐ŸŸ $480 billion from Mexico
๐ŸŸ $448 billion from China
๐ŸŸ $429.5 billion from Canada

US exports totaled:
๐ŸŸ $323 billion to Mexico
๐ŸŸ $148 billion to China
๐ŸŸ $353 billion to Canada

The $533.5 billion trade deficit gives the US leverage for imposing tariffs that partners may struggle to counter.

๐Ÿ”How much revenue could tariffs bring in?

A 2024 Tax Foundation report projects:
๐ŸŸ 10% cross-the-board tariffs could raise $2 trillion from 2025-2034.
๐ŸŸ 20% tariffs could raise $3.3 trillion, with losses to growth factored in.

๐Ÿ”Who will pay?

Consumers
bear the costs through higher prices on imports.

During Trumpโ€™s first term:
๐ŸŸ Tariffs on $380 billion in goods cost households $194-$380/year on average.
๐ŸŸ Inflation on tariff-affected categories rose by 4%, per Goldman Sachs.

๐Ÿ”Are tariffs helpful or harmful?

๐Ÿ”ฝHarmful for sectors dependent on imported inputs and for exporters facing retaliation.

๐Ÿ”ผHelpful for certain industries:

๐ŸŸ Steel and consumer goods like washing machines saw job creation.
๐ŸŸ Some companies shifted production to non-tariffed countries but didn't return to the US.

๐Ÿ”Economic impact of Trump's tariff strategy:

๐ŸŸ No significant impact on GDP growth during trade wars.
๐ŸŸ Before the Covid crisis hit, wages rose, unemployment fell, and 60-68% of Americans said it was a โ€œgood time to find a quality job,โ€ per Gallup.

๐Ÿ’ธPucca goes crypto? South Korean toon favorite reportedly bought out by cryptobro

The IP rights to Pucca, a popular animated series about a girl hopelessly in love with a shy handsome ninja in training, have reportedly been purchased to advertise crypto based on Solana โ€“ the blockchain tech used by Trumpโ€™s new memecoin.

Puccaโ€™s Reddit fans have it on good authority that a user known as โ€œJimmyโ€ bought the rights last year.

The account, now banned in the subreddit for being โ€œvery mean and rude,โ€ is known for publishing a series of memes and art on world affairs, tech and games with crypto ad integration.

Meanwhile, Puccaโ€™s dormant official YouTube channel recently dropped a new video dubbed PUCCA IS BACK, signaling the possibility of new short films.

Donald Trumpโ€™s return to the White House and embrace of digital currencies have put crypto on a rocketship to stonksland.

However, his crypto czar David Sacks warned last week that NFTs and memecoins are not securities, but โ€œcollectiblesโ€ฆlike a baseball card or a stampโ€ and shouldnโ€™t be used as investments.

๐Ÿ”ฅFire at key Australian lithium mine raises industry concerns

The Mount Holland lithium mine in Western Australia has reportedly shut down after a fire engulfed the site, approximately 105 km southeast of Southern Cross. Hot weather and strong winds have fueled nearby bushfires, forcing evacuations.

The shutdown has sparked worries about significant disruptions to the lithium industry, critical for semiconductors and electric vehicles (EVs).

The Mt Holland project, launched in 2024, includes:

๐ŸŸ An open-cut mine, concentrator, and refinery expected to produce lithium hydroxide in early 2025.

๐ŸŸ A 50+ year operational lifespan, owned by Covalent Lithium, Wesfarmers, and SQM.

๐ŸŸ Production of 380,000 tons of spodumene concentrate annually, refined into 50,000 tons of battery-grade lithium hydroxide โ€“ enough to power one million EVs.

The mine was seen as key to reducing reliance on lithium processing dominated by countries like China. With lithium demand forecast to surge fortyfold by 2035 due to EV growth, the shutdown highlights vulnerabilities in the global supply chain.

German Christian Democrats propose state of emergency over migrant crisis

Amid the catastrophic influx of illegal immigrants and growing violence, the German opposition bloc of the Christian Democratic Union (CDU) and the Christian Social Union (CSU) is calling for the introduction of long-term controls at Germany's borders and the denial of entry to all foreigners who do not have permission to stay in the country.

Newspaper Bild reports that the proposal includes a clause to declare A STATE OF EMERGENCY in Germany over the influx of illegal immigrants, allowing authorities to introduce full border controls and allow European Union legislation to be circumvented at German borders.

โ“100 days to peace? Alleged timeline for Ukraine conflict's resolution emerges

The purported plan proposes a ceasefire by Easter, and peace by May 9 โ€“ the 80th anniversary of the end of WWII in Europe. Published by Strana .ua, its authenticity remains unconfirmed.

๐Ÿ”ธ According to the reportโ€™s timeline, Trump will call Putin and Zelensky in late January/early February, with Zelensky expected to revoke the peace talks ban.

๐Ÿ”ธ Face-to-face meetings are planned for February-March to draft a peace deal.

๐Ÿ”ธ A truce begins April 20 (Easter), with Ukrainian forces withdrawing from Kursk.

๐Ÿ”ธ Late April: An international peace conference starts, mediated by the US, China, Europe, and Global South countries, with all prisoners exchanged.

๐Ÿ”ธ May 9: A final peace declaration is to be issued.

๐Ÿ“‘ Terms:

๐Ÿ”น Upon the conflict's conclusion, Ukraine will end martial law, hold elections in August (including pro-Russian parties), and halt persecution of the Orthodox Church.

๐Ÿ”น It will declare neutrality, abandon NATO ambitions, and stop seeking to reclaim Russian-held territories, without recognizing their status.

๐Ÿ”น Ukraine can pursue EU membership by 2030, with the EU leading reconstruction efforts.

๐Ÿ”น Its military size remains unchanged, with US support for modernization.

๐Ÿ”น Some Western sanctions, including on Russian energy exports to Europe, will be lifted.

๐Ÿ—ฃReactions:

๐Ÿ”Š Zelensky aide Andriy Ermak dismissed the existence of a 100-day Trump plan as โ€œfake news.โ€

๐Ÿ”Š Western outlets, including WSJ and The Independent, previously reported on Trumpโ€™s ambition to end the Ukraine crisis by spring.

๐Ÿ”Š Belarusian President Lukashenko said Sunday โ€œthe light at the end of the tunnelโ€ in the Ukraine crisis would โ€œappear this year.โ€

Not approved

French President Emmanuel Macronโ€™s approval rating has plunged to just 21%, hitting its lowest point in years, according to an Ifop poll for Le Journal du Dimanche.

In September 2024, just 25% of respondents approved of his performanceโ€”a low point not seen since the 2018 Yellow Vest protests. By December it had fallen to 24%, and in January 2025 it dropped another three points.

During his second term Macron has faced a political crisis and difficulties in forming a government. Rising national debt and a growing deficit have also fueled public dissatisfaction with his economic policies.

Critics argue he prioritizes Ukraine over France, further alienating voters who see him as out of touch.

Whatโ€™s going on in DR Congo? Major northern city besieged, ties with Rwanda severed

๐Ÿ”ธ The M23 rebel movement has advanced on Goma, the capital of North-Kivu province in the DRC.

๐Ÿ”ธ The cityโ€™s airport is closed for UN humanitarian operations, with M23 declaring airspace shut.

๐Ÿ”ธ The DRC has severed ties with Rwanda, accusing it of fueling the conflict and participating in fighting.

๐Ÿ”ธ Hundreds of thousands have fled or been displaced from Goma, a city of one million.

๐Ÿ”ธ Nine UN peacekeepers and SADC troops have been killed in fighting.

๐Ÿ”ธ The M23 (March 23 Movement), also known as the Congolese Revolutionary Army, a Tutsi-led militia from the DRCโ€™s northeast, claims the government has failed to integrate Congolese Tutsis into administration and military roles.

๐Ÿ”ธ M23 now controls a coltan mining operation, vital for electronics production.

๐Ÿ”ธ The DRC, despite $24-$35 trillion in untapped resources, remains one of the worldโ€™s poorest nations.

๐Ÿ”ธ Observers fear violence could escalate into a regional conflict like the Great Lakes wars of the 1990s-2000s, which caused millions of deaths.
