๐Ÿช– South Korea under martial law: what we know right now

South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol declared martial law at 11 pm Tuesday amid opposition attempts to impeach senior officials and legislative battles over the budget. Here are the details.

The move was aimed at โ€œprotectingโ€ South Korea โ€œfrom North Korean communist and anti-state forcesโ€ and preserving โ€œthe free constitutional order,โ€ Yoon said.

๐Ÿ”ธ ROK Army Chief-of-Staff Gen. Park An-su was tapped to implement the decision, suspending parliament and political parties, taking control over all media and banning the spread of so-called โ€œfake news,โ€ on penalty on arrest without warrant.

๐Ÿ”ธ The army deployed to the streets of Seoul, while small groups of protesters seen scuffling with police outside the National Assembly Proceeding Hall parliament building, shouting โ€œEnd martial law!โ€

๐Ÿ”ธ As troops arrived, protesters chided security forces and warned they would โ€œregretโ€ the โ€œsin that will go down in historyโ€ of complying with orders from their superiors.

๐Ÿ”ธ South Koreaโ€™s ruling People Power leader Han Dong-hoon slammed Yoonโ€™s decision, vowing to end the crackdown โ€œtogether with the people.โ€ The party is known to be divided between pro-Yoon and Yoon-neutral factions.

๐Ÿ”ธ Opposition Democratic Party leader Lee Jae-myung called the martial law announcement โ€œillegalโ€ and โ€œunconstitutional,โ€ accused Yoon of โ€œbetraying the peopleโ€ and said the president had lost his legitimacy.

๐Ÿ”ธ Addressing soldiers, Lee said โ€œthe guns and bayonets you have, the power you have, comes from the people.โ€

๐Ÿ”ธ Democratic Party Parliament Speaker Woo Won-shik urged his fellow lawmakers to try to gather in parliament building.

๐Ÿ”ธ The White House said itโ€™s โ€œin contactโ€ with ROK authorities and โ€œmonitoring the situation closely.โ€

๐Ÿ”ธ North Korea has yet to officially react.

๐Ÿ”ธ This is the first time martial law has been declared since 1980. South Korea hasnโ€™t been under military rule since 1987.
