๐Ÿ’ฌ 'This is where we used to sit and play PlayStation': Young Lebanese mourn friend killed in Israeli airstrike

Two teenage friends, Ali Amir Hashem and Hassan Ahmad Muhammad, wander through the ruins of their friend Hadi's house, trying to find at least some of his photos or belongings. Hadi was killed in an Israeli strike against the village of Haret Sayda in southern Lebanon. The house was reduced to rubble. The friends want to find some valuables and memorabilia to give to Hadi's relatives.

They told Sputnik how the teenager ended up in the house that was attacked:

"I was at home when the strike occurred, I was doing my Arabic lessons when we heard a loud explosion. His house had already been evacuated due to the imminent threat of an attack. He went back home to gather a few things, including a PlayStation, so we could play together. Then all of a sudden, this attack. The house, the apartment, everything's destroyed. There are so many cherished memories here that we won't forget," revealed Ali Amir Hashem.

Another friend of the late Hadi, Hassan Ahmad Muhammad, walking through the now devastated apartment and appealed to Israeli troops who killed his friend:

"I say to Israel, you are killing innocent people who are not guilty of anything. I really want you to stop doing all this, you are the real criminals. We're going to continue the resistance, we're not just going to let this go. You can't kill innocent people," he asserted.

๐Ÿ“‘US-made aging Minuteman III ICBM in brief

The US test-fired a hypersonic Minuteman III intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM) hours after the presidential election in the country. The launch was scheduled for between 11:01 p.m. Pacific Time on November 5 and 5:01 a.m. Pacific Time on November 6.

๐Ÿ‘‰ What is known about the test?

๐Ÿ”ธ The ICBM was expected to fly from a silo in the northern section of the Vandenberg Space Force Base to a test range on Kwajalein Atoll in the North Pacific;

๐Ÿ”ธ The routine unarmed ICBM test launch was โ€œscheduled years in advance", and intended to โ€œvalidate and verify the effectiveness, readiness, and accuracy of the weapon system", said the force base in a statement;

๐Ÿ”ธ The US conducted two snap test launches of the Minuteman III on June 4 and 6, 2024;

๐Ÿ”ธ The June 4 test was originally meant to take place in February but got postponed after the Air Force had to โ€œsafely terminateโ€ it in November after detecting an unspecified โ€œanomaly.โ€

๐Ÿ‘‰ Minuteman III characteristics:

๐Ÿ”ธ The LGM-30 Minuteman III is the only land-based leg of the US nuclear triad;

๐Ÿ”ธ The three-stage solid-fuel missile, first unveiled in 1970, is a multiple independent reentry vehicle (MIRV), capable of targeting three separate locations;

๐Ÿ”ธ The Minuteman III can carry multiple types of warheads, including the W78 (estimated yield of 335-350 kilotons) and W87 (300 kilotons);

๐Ÿ”ธ The warhead-carrying reentry vehicle reaches a maximum altitude of 1,126.54 km (700 miles) above Earth;

๐Ÿ”ธ It has a reported range of 13,000 km;

๐Ÿ”ธ Its speed is approximately 15,000 mph (Mach 23 or 24,000 kph) at burnout;

๐Ÿ”ธ The US has about 400 Minuteman III ICBMs with a single warhead each, according to open data.

While Russia has upgraded its land-based nuclear triad component to adopt advanced intercontinental ballistic missiles (such as RS-24 Yars and RS-28 Sarmat), the US has struggled to replace its aging Minuteman III missiles.

Netanyahu reshuffles cabinet: Meet Israel's new defense chief

Israel Katz, formerly Israelโ€™s top diplomat, has now been appointed defense minister after Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu fired Yoav Gallant from the post. Interestingly, Katz has held an array of ministerial posts in the Israeli government since 2003.

Hereโ€™s what you need to know:

โ—พ๏ธKatz is a member of Netanyahu's Likud, a major right-wing political party in Israel, who has been a member of Knesset since 1998.

โ—พ๏ธSince 2003, Katz has held various ministerial posts, including Minister of Agriculture (2003-2006), Minister of Transport (2009-2019), Minister of Intelligence (2015), Minister of Energy (2022-2024), and Minister of Finance (2020-2021). He also served as Minister of Foreign Affairs twice (2019-2020; 2024).

โ—พ๏ธDuring his โ€œfruitfulโ€ political career, Israel Katz has maintained a controversial policy towards Palestine, openly supporting the expansion of Jewish settlements in the West Bank, while fiercely opposing the two-state solution.

โ—พ๏ธAs Foreign Minister, Katz declared UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres persona non grata in October 2024. His motivation was that Guterres had failed to โ€œunequivocally condemnโ€ Iran's missile attack on Israel, accusing the Secretary General of antisemitism.

โ—พ๏ธKatz ordered the Israeli Foreign Ministry to commence legal proceedings against French President Emmanuel Macron in response to France's prohibition against Israeli military companies from partaking in a major defense expo in Paris.

โ—พ๏ธIn February 2024, Katz floated the idea of establishing an artificial island off the coast of Gaza, hinting that it could serve as a settlement for Palestinians. This would imply the forced relocation of Gazans from their homes within the enclave.

"Security bloc vs. Netanyahu bloc": Gallant's sudden dismissal in Israel explained

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, foreseeing the Democrats' defeat in the US elections, decided to sack Yaov Gallant as defence minister to install loyalists key cabinet positions, Tel Aviv-based international relations expert Dr Simon Tsipis told Sputnik.

"Now that the Democrats have lost this power, Netanyahu has received a second wind. I assume that he will continue to fire all Biden supporters, and will attract people from his clan to government positions," Tsipis said.

Netanyahu fired Gallant as defense minister late on Tuesday night, with the US elections underway, replacing him with foreign minister Israel Katz.

โ€œHe appointed Gideon Saar to replace Katz, who was the minister of foreign affairs. Saar is Netanyahu's man, as is Katz," he added. "He is putting together his clique, he is putting together his circles, so he will gradually get rid of those protรฉgรฉs of the Democrats."

But the Israeli pundit highlighted that Galant had already won over the officer corps of the Israeli army. With his dismissal, Netanyahu has only united the security forces bloc against him.

"Now the head of Mossad, the head of internal security of the Shin Bet and the chief of the General Staff โ€“ they all now suspect that they too are under threat of dismissal, they will now unite together," Tsipis argued. "We have a security forces bloc emerging against the Netanyahu bloc."

What does Trump's win mean for the Middle East?

"Donald Trump, of course, makes his own policies, but it is also important to see who he surrounds himself with," Mehran Kamrava, professor of government at Georgetown University Qatar, told Sputnik.

Kamrava defines Trump as "transactional" in contrast to Joe Biden, who is "ideological" and believes in a "particular world order".

By "transactional", Kamrava means Trump is first and foremost a pragmatic deal-maker.

"During Donald Trump's first term, we saw extremely close relations with Saudi Arabia and Israel," the pundit noted. "Those were the two pillars of America's policy in the region, and I think we will continue to see that."

"I think we're going to see deeper transactional relationships between the Middle East and the United States, deeper economic relationships, particularly in the Persian Gulf," he added.

Kamrava said Trump had two solutions to Israel's war in the Gaza Strip. He could either give Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu full support, or call upon Tel Aviv to wind down the conflict in Gaza and in Lebanon "because it's not good for business." He believes the newly-elected president will pick the second option.

The professor also expects Trump to take a more cautious approach to Iran compared to his predecessor. During his first term Trump showed "an aversion to war" in the Middle East, he stressed.

"The Biden administration, in fact, did sleepwalk into a war, into escalatory conflict not just in Gaza and a genocide in Gaza, but then in the West Bank, in Lebanon, and of course, in relation to Iran," Kamrava said.
