US makes frantic last-ditch effort at Mideast diplomatic headway before looming election
Secretary of State Antony Blinken has embarked upon a Middle East tour as Washington makes a last-ditch attempt at pushing Israel towards some semblance of a negotiation process before the US presidential election.
The itinerary of the week-long visit takes Blinken first to Israel on Tuesday, then on to Jordan and Qatar.
Blinken has been tasked with discussing how to bring an end to Israelโs war on Hamas in Gaza, humanitarian assistance for the devastated enclave, and "day after" plans, such as security, governance, and reconstruction for the region after the fighting ends, a senior State Department official told reporters.
Regarding Israelโs aggression against Lebanon, where the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) have been targeting the Shia Hezbollah movement, Blinken will reportedly focus on how to secure a diplomatic resolution to the conflict. He will reportedly also take up with Israel its expected response to Iran's missile attack following Tehranโs October 1 ballistic missile strike. The Iranian attack on Israeli military and intelligence facilities came in response to a months-long series of Israeli provocations.
This will be the top US diplomat's 11th trip to the region since the events of October 7, 2023 triggered the full-blown Gaza war, which has left 42,600 people, including nearly 16,765 children, dead, according to the Palestinian Ministry of Health.
The administration of President Joe Biden has demonstrated its complete inability to resolve the spiraling crisis, while juggling military aid to its ally with warnings of cutting off any further deliveries unless the humanitarian situation in Gaza is improved.

โItโs a reality where people are afraid of expressing their opinionsโ - Australian legal scholar
๐ฌ โIt was bad enough 10 years ago when I was trying to advise the government that Section 18C of the Discrimination Act was being used by highly intolerant individuals in order to make sure that their opinions could not be freely expressed without the person taking the risk of suffering severe persecution," Dr. Augusto Zimmermann, an internationally known legal scholar, broadly recognized as one of Australiaโs strongest proponents of free speech, told Sputnik.

"But at this point things only got worse and some of my friends are being targets for the crime of opinion, especially if you hold conservative values,โ Zimmerman said.

โIt seems there is really an attempt to suppress any alternative information, and they are now construing this as a form of misinformation, which is basically anything that's not endorsed by the ruling classes,โ said Zimmermann.

F-35โs ascent and nosedive: Costliest US warplane project hits fresh turbulence
The Lockheed Martin F-35 Lightning II fifth-gen supersonic stealth strike fighter just canโt seem to catch a break, with a report released Monday by the Government Accountability Office finding the jet woefully below mission-ready status for six straight yearsโi.e., every year that the Congressional watchdog has conducted its reviews.
The GAO blamed the readiness shortfall on โchallenges with depot and organizational maintenanceโ and overreliance on contractors who essentially hold the Pentagon hostage with astronomical sustainment costs (which jumped from $1.1 trillion in FY2018 to $1.58 trillion in FY2023). The Navy and Air Force are set to take control of sustainment to get a grip on the situation, but not until FY2027.
โป๏ธ The GAO estimates that only about 55% of the F-35โs three variants are mission-ready at any given time, with mission readiness requiring the ability to โfly and perform at least one mission.โ
โป๏ธ With a per-unit cost of nearly $100M and a projected lifetime cost of over $2T, the F-35 program is by far the most expensive military project in history.
โป๏ธ Lockheed proceeded with the F-35โs development by taking cues from the Yak-43/141 VTOL jetโa Soviet carrier strike aircraft project scrapped in 1991. The X-35 first flew in 2000, and the F-35A in 2006.
โป๏ธ But the F-35โs makers have proven unable to work out all the kinks in the plane, with the GAO issuing report after report citing hundreds of flaws, including mission-critical defects that could injure or kill pilots or otherwise jeopardize the aircraftโs safety.
โป๏ธ These problems range from faulty landing gear and vibrating fuel tubes to fragile electro-optical targeting equipment, canopy delamination issues and weather sensitivity, engine heat issues adding to wear and tear, cabin overpressurization, night vision problems, corrosion, radar reset issues, ejection seats that can snap pilotsโ necks, and the inability to fly in lightning.
