Iranian Minister of Petroleum Javad Owji announced that Moscow and Tehran have reached a strategic agreement on Russian gas exports to Iran.
While this venture is yet to move beyond the memorandum of understanding stage, some details of the agreement signed between the Russian energy giant Gazprom and the Iranian National Gas Company have become available to the press.
▪️Under the auspices of this deal, Iran may start receiving vast quantities of Russian natural gas, possibly up to 300 million cubic meters per day or nearly 110 billion cubic meters per year, which is approximately 45% of Iran’s current gas consumption and roughly equals the maximum output of the now-defunct Nord Stream 1 and 2 natural gas pipelines.
▪️The project is also going to involve the construction of a natural gas pipeline across Iran, “from north to south,” with the annual revenue of this venture being estimated at about $10-12 billion, the Iranian news agency IRNA reported, citing Owji.
▪️The project will purportedly involve building an underwater pipeline across the Caspian Sea, from Russia to Iran, Asharq Al-Awsat reported. The construction, if launched, might require coordination with border states of Turkmenistan, Azerbaijan and Kazakhstan.

Russia and Iran hold joint naval drills to strengthen regional cooperation
The joint naval exercise "Caspian Maritime Rescue, Relief and Security 2024" (CASAREX24) kicked off on July 22 in the Caspian Sea, involving naval forces from Iran and Russia, Tasnim News reported, citing Iranian Navy commander Captain Abbas Hassani.

▪️The Iranian Navy’s airborne division and military vessels, including Sina-class missile-launching vessels Paykan, Darafsh, and Separ, two AB-212 helicopters and the Islamic Revolution Guards Corps Navy's flotilla "Martry Baseer" took part in the drills.
▪️Iran's Separ (P234) is considered to be one of Iran's most up-to-date frigates which boasts a high speed and is equipped with surface-to-surface missile system, anti-aircraft, and anti-surface defense systems.
▪️Russia’s SB-45-class rescue tugboat entered the Iranian territorial waters on July 21 to participate in the exercises. The vessel is designed to provide assistance to ships in case of emergency, extinguish fires on vessels and coastal structures.
▪️The crew of the Russian rescue tugboat and Iranian sailors jointly practiced actions to assist a damaged ship and rescue its crew members. The military also practiced their skills in towing a damaged vessel.
▪️The Iranian and Russian vessels also hit surface targets in the sea within the drill's framework, according to Hassani, as quoted by Mehr News Agency.
▪️Representatives from other states on the Caspian Sea's littoral, including those of the Republic of Azerbaijan were monitoring the naval exercises as observers.
