US Secret Service rejected requests to strengthen Trump's security - reports
The US Secret Service says it rejected requests to strengthen former US President Donald Trump's security with its resources for two years before the assassination attempt, The New York Times reported, citing Anthony Guglielmi, a spokesman for the Secret Service.
At the same time, Guglielmi noted that the requests for beefed-up security did not specifically concern the event in Pennsylvania where Trump was wounded in a shooting, the report said.
He also added that in cases where the Secret Service was unable to provide additional security for Trump, it had deployed state or local law enforcement officers, or altered security plans, to reduce the threat to Trump's life, the report read.
The shooting took place on July 13 at a Trump rally in Butler, Pennsylvania. Trump sustained a gun wound to his right ear and was briefly hospitalized.

New Canadaโs defense chief is another inclusivity โnail in the coffinโ of the armed forces
General Jennie Carignan has officially taken over command of the Canadian Armed Forces (CAF) on Thursday as the army now grapples with a "toxic culture" Carignan was tasked to make "more respectful and inclusive," state website reported.
Many X users slammed the appointment saying: โIs this a DEI [diversity, equity and inclusion] hire?โ Another user described it as โjust another DEI nail in the coffin of the CF.โ โAnother handpicked DEI. She hasn't seen a minute of action. Those badges of honor were 3D printed,โ one more user claimed.
Others bashed her nomination as a โnational embarrassmentโ and PM Justin Trudeauโs โcoup de grace" for DND (Department of National Defense).โ According to one post, the nomination is a โdiversity hire of the worst type; our military is no longer legitimate nor worthy of our respect.โ
The developments come as real problems of the Canadian Armed Forces show no sign of being resolved:
๐ธ Just 61% of the Canadian military are considered operationally ready, while only 40% are capable of providing simultaneous operational support, per government data.
๐ธ The countryโs armed forces are short of almost 16,000 regular and reserve troops, with nearly 10,500 soldiers still in training and unready for deployment, according to former Canadian Chief of Defense Staff Wayne Eyre.
๐ธ The Canadian armyโs aging ships, planes, and other items of equipment, have reportedly "become difficult and costly to maintainโ, with the DND considering their retirement.
๐ธ The military is running out of ammo, with no plans to replenish it, according to Andrew Leslie, former chief of staff of the Canadian Army.
๐ธ Youri Cormier, executive director of an Ottawa-based national security organization, has insisted that the โextremely direโ situation in the Canadian Armed Forces is the product of โdecades of consistent underfunding.โ
