Yemen's internationally recognized government and the Ansar Allah rebel movement have reached a tentative deal that will ensure the release of dozens of Houthi rebels in exchange for the leader of the second-largest Yemeni party, a source close to the talks told Sputnik.
The Saudi-backed Yemeni government and Houthi rebels, who control the country's north, exchanged lists totaling hundreds of prisoners that will be approved in the coming days. The rivals plans to eventually free some 1,400 prisoners under a deal reached in March 2022, the source said.
The power struggle between the internationally recognized government and Houthis has continued in Yemen for more than nine years, leading to a deep economic and social crisis. About 4.5 million people have been displaced by the war, while two-thirds of the population are in dire need of relief aid, the UN estimates.

Congressman Raul Grijalva has become the second fellow sitting Democrat to call on US President Joe Biden to leave the presidential race following his weak performance in the first debate against Donald Trump, The New York Times reported.
Grijalva follows Congressman Lloyd Doggett, who called on Biden to step down earlier this week in the first instance of a fellow party member to do so.
Discussions on how soon Biden may either resign or be forced to step down for medical reasons erupted even in mainstream US media following the president's poor performance in his Thursday night debate with former President Donald Trump.
However, the Biden campaign said that it had not held any discussions about replacing Biden with an alternative nominee for the presidency.

โIf heโs the candidate, Iโm going to support him, but I think that this is an opportunity to look elsewhere,โ the report quoted Grijalva as saying in an interview about Biden. โWhat he needs to do is shoulder the responsibility for keeping that seat โ and part of that responsibility is to get out of this race.โ

US military forces destroyed two Houthi radar sites in Yemen and two uncrewed surface vessels (USV) in the Red Sea, US Central Command (CENTCOM) said.
US authorities determined that the radar sites and USVs presented imminent threats to US coalition forces and merchant vessels in the region, it added.
Yemen's Ansar Allah movement, also known as the Houthis, have controlled much of northern Yemen since 2016. The group vowed in November 2023 to attack any ships linked to Israel until the country halts military action in Gaza.

'No exit strategy, no plan': Israel turns its eyes on Jerusalem as Gaza Strip war crumbles
Palestinian health officials said that an Israeli strike killed at least nine people in the southern Gaza city of Khan Younis just less than a day after the state ordered the evacuation of Palestinians from parts of that city. More than 1 million Palestinian civilians who fled the Israeli assault on Rafah had been sheltering in Khan Yunis and are once more being forcibly displaced, Sputnikโs radio host Rachel Blevins noted.
Israel seems set to scale down their bombardment of Gaza, and turn their attention to the north with a possible war against Hezbollah on the horizon, Blevins reported. However, US Secretary of State Antony Blinken said this week that there have been no signs that Israel will lower their bombardment of the Gaza Strip.

โSadly, Khan Yunis was first evacuated on December 5th and then it became kind of like the central, the main tent city in southern Gaza around May, when the operation in Rafah started,โ said Ecuadorian journalist and editor of The Cradle, Esteban Carrillo.

โ[Israel hasnโt] been able to take on Hamas in Gaza after nine months. Hezbollah can make Israel feel such pain that they have never felt before in a matter of days. There's the threat from Israeli leaders about taking Lebanon back to the Stone Age. What do you think's going to happen to Israel? You know, what Hezbollah is going to do to Israel is going to be exactly the same, if not worse, because Hezbollah is not depleted. Hezbollah is not weary. Hezbollah hasn't spent nine months fighting a brutal war,โ Carrillo suggested.

Several US Democratic Party governors have told reporters they held a meeting with US President Joe Biden where they had honest discussions about their concerns over his dismal debate night, but overall they believe he is still fit for office and they will continue to support his reelection bid.
Walz and Maryland Governor Wes Moore emphasized that although all the 24 Democratic governors who participated in the meeting expressed honest and candid concerns, in the end they all pledged to stand behind Biden's run for reelection.
Moore and New York Governor Kathy Hochul added that Biden is "all in" to win the US presidential election in November.
Earlier in the day, users on social media shared what appeared to be emails sent by the Biden campaign and Democratic Party reassuring supporters that Joe Biden will stay in the race and be the party's nominee.

As European powers focus on backing Ukraineโs proxy war against Russia, Western leaders have seemingly forgotten the importance of votersโ material concerns, argued security analyst David Oualaalou on Sputnikโs The Critical Hour program.
The economic situation is perhaps most dire in Germany, which suffered a recession in 2023 and may be in the midst of another, according to economists. The country, traditionally the industrial powerhouse of Europe, has suffered disproportionately as sanctions on Russian energy have taken a bite out of the manufacturing sector.

โThe reality is on the ground following, for example, the elections in France,โ said Oualaalou, referring to the first round of parliamentary elections in the country where President Emmanuel Macronโs centrist party came in a distant third place. โThis is a clear indication where things are headed, that the era of Macron is over.โ
โThis is what youโre seeing the Europeans are doing right now โ the population, that is,โ he continued. โTheyโve had enough. Theyโve had enough. And the election is now a reflection of this.โ

The country, traditionally the industrial powerhouse of Europe, has suffered disproportionately as sanctions on Russian energy have taken a bite out of the manufacturing sector.
โThe Ukraine war shut off Germanyโs access to cheap Russian energy,โ noted an article Tuesday on the website The Greanville Post. โThe lethal blow was the American destruction of the Nord Stream pipeline, with broad European-wide consequences.โ
โI just read a survey this morning that Germany lost 3 billion dollars,โ noted Oualaalou. โYou know what the losses are in? In theft. People were stealing. Why were they stealing? Itโs because the prices went up beyond what they can afford. $3 billion for the year of 2023โฆ The moment they embarked on following the US blindly with the sanctions against Russia, it backfired on them.โ
