๐Ÿ“น Now, more than 80% of all our payments with our BRICS colleagues are in national currencies, said First Deputy Chairman of Russia's State Duma Alexander Zhukov at the SPIEF session โ€œBRICS Goals in the Context of the New World Orderโ€ about economic cooperation between the member countries of the organization.

Establishing payment mechanisms within BRICS that do not depend on the Western banking system is one of the most pressing topics today, Alexander Zhukov added.

Iran blames UK, France and Germany for possible disruption of IAEA agreements

Europeโ€™s Big Three (Britain, France and Germany) will be held responsible for Iran's possible response to the Board of Governors of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) passing a resolution that claims that Tehran is not cooperating sufficiently with the organization, according to Mohsen Naziri Asl, Iranโ€™s ambassador and permanent representative at the UN and other international organizations in Vienna.

"Undoubtedly, this resolution will have a strong [negative] impact on the positive atmosphere for coordinating further steps between Iran and the IAEA. The European Big Three will have to bear responsibility for any consequences,โ€ Asl pointed out.

The IAEA Board of Governorsโ€™ meeting was influenced by โ€œprovocative and unconstructive actions by a raft of countries with a record of non-compliance with international law," he said. Europeโ€™s Big Three submitted the draft anti-Iranian resolution in order to "distract attention from their irresponsible behavior and to ignore the existing realities in the field of Iran's nuclear program, which is purely peaceful," the Iranian diplomat stressed.

He added that European countries' attempts to put pressure on Iran and prod it to renounce its rights to go ahead with peaceful nuclear activities will not be successful.

Putin's meeting with reporters at SPIEF: global media reactions

Russian President Vladimir Putin's sit-down with the heads of a number of international news agencies on the sidelines of the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum 2024 has grabbed the headlines of these outlets.

๐Ÿ”ธ China's Xinhua quoted Putin as saying that the development of Russia-China relations, based on profound common interests, is conducive to world stability.

๐Ÿ”ธIran's IRNA quoted Putin as praising the late Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi for "a great role in the expansion of ties between the two countries" and promising that efforts would be made to preserve the achievements made during Raisi's tenure.

๐Ÿ”ธThe Turkish news agency Anadolu mentioned the Russian president's warning that "if someone's actions threaten our [Russia's] sovereignty and territorial integrity", Moscow will use all the means at its disposal.

Separately, Anadolu quoted Putin as calling Israeli actions in Gaza "a kind of total destruction of civilian population".

๐Ÿ”ธJapan's Kyodo News highlighted the Russian leader's comments that conditions are not currently right for Moscow to resume talks with Tokyo on a post-World War II peace treaty.

๐Ÿ”ธReuters and the AP, in turn, pointed to Putin's statement that Moscow could respond in kind if the US and its European allies allow Ukraine to strike deeper into Russia with Western long-range weapons.

๐Ÿ”ธPutin's comments on the matter also made headlines on the BBC, CNN, Sky News, the New York Times and the Washington Post.

๐Ÿ”ธThe Telegraph, for its part, alluded to the Russian president's emotional reaction to allegations of Moscow's supposed plans to attack NATO, which Putin said were nothing but "b*ll*cks".

Why is it wrong to call SPIEF the 'Russian Davos'?

Scott Bennett, former US Army psychological warfare officer and US state department counterterrorism analyst:

โ€œIn the St. Petersburg Economic Forum I see a mix of national integrity, national pride, cultural identity, cultural pride, as well as the economic mathematics of business and industryโ€ฆDavos is more like how do we change the world? How do we push the world? How do we control the world?โ€

Likelihood of US deploying nukes in Asia-Pacific aimed at strategic containment of Russia, China

The potential deployment of US tactical nuclear weapons in the western Pacific Ocean, including military bases in South Korea, Japan, Okinawa, the Philippines, and the island of Diego Garcia, "would become a direct factor of strategic containment against Russia's Far East, Northern China, and North Korea," the director of the Knowfar Institute for Strategic and Defense Studies, Li Jian warned.

Such actions could disrupt the regional strategic balance, exacerbate arms races, and impede nuclear non-proliferation efforts, he told Sputnik.

The expert pointed out that the US Air Force has already upgraded the tactical nuclear bomb B61-12, and testing has been successfully completed for aircraft such as the F-15, F-16, B-2, and F-35A. Production is expected to be completed by 2026. With the US Department of Defense set to procure 400 B61-12 tactical nuclear bombs, deployment plans are now being considered.

In general, military bases in South Korea, Japan, Okinawa, the Philippines, and Diego Garcia are being evaluated for the potential deployment of B61-12 tactical nuclear bombs in the western Pacific Ocean, as mentioned by Li Jian.

US Senator Roger Wicker, the highest-ranking Republican on the Senate Armed Services Committee, released a report on May 29, suggestion to explore "new strategies, including a "nuclear sharing agreement in the Indo-Pacific and re-deployment of US tactical nuclear weapons in the Korean Peninsula," to counter nations like North Korea and China.
