Israel's Gaza Offensive May Turn Into Urban 'Meat Grinderโ€™

Yuri Lyamin, military expert has drawn parallels between Israel's potential ground offensive and battles for Mariupol and Artemovsk (Bakhmut) โ€“ the latter lasted for 224 days.

๐Ÿ—ฃ "Gaza is larger than Artemovsk or even Mariupol with all these industrial facilities," the military expert said. "And most importantly, there is a much larger population [in the Gaza Strip]. In my opinion, there are about 2.5-3 million people living in Gaza now."

๐Ÿ—ฃ "I would compare [Gaza] with Mariupol, after all, for the reason that Artemovsk is a relatively small city, there are several tens of thousands of people there. In Mariupol, the population was under half a million. Closer to Mariupol, but again the density is higher,"
he continued.

What is the Gaza Strip now under Israelโ€™s complete siege?

๐Ÿ“Œ The Gaza Strip, also known as Gaza, is a Palestinian exclave located on the eastern coast of the Mediterranean Sea, Nestled between Israel, Egypt and the Mediterranean, the exclave has an area of about ten kilometers wide and 41 kilometers long.

๐Ÿ“Œ The area was named after its densely-populated capital of Gaza City.

๐Ÿ“Œ As a result of the coup carried out by the Islamist militant group Hamas in July 2007, the government institutions of the Palestinian Authority (PA) and the Gaza Strip came under the groupโ€™s authority.

๐Ÿ“Œ Most of the residents live in the north of the area, in particular in Gaza City. Sunni Muslims make up the predominant part of the population.

๐Ÿ“Œ In September 2005, Israel wrapped up the withdrawal of its troops from Gaza, and control of the area was transferred to the PA.

๐Ÿ“Œ Since 2007, the Gaza Strip has been governed by the militant group Hamas, which rejects the peace process with Israel.
