π Harini Logan of San Antonio, Texas, wins Scripps National Spelling Bee in first-ever lightning-round tiebreaker
The 2022 Scripps National Spelling Bee ended in a way none of the 93 competitions before it did, a spell-off. The final two competitors, Vikram Raju and Harini Logan, could not decipher any of their spelling attempts between Round 13 and 18. The bell rang 10 consecutive times. At that point, judges opted to institute the first spell-off β 90 seconds to spell as many words as possible correctly.
Logan β an eighth-grader from Texas β spelled 21 words correctly, compared to Raju's 15, to become the 2022 champion. She took home the $50,000 cash prize and Scripps Cup trophy on top of awards from Merriam-Webster and Encyclopedia Britannica.

π Apple attempts to appease union efforts with scheduling improvements
Apple will make a number of changes to scheduling rules for its retail employees that the company believes will result in more flexible working hours. The changes will include changes to limits on the number of late shifts worked, consecutive days worked and the minimum amount of time that must pass before an employee is eligible to work a new shift.
The company expanded benefits earlier this year, increasing the number of paid sick days and offering paid parental leave. It also set a new floor of $22 per hour for its retail employees last week. Still, Fruit Stand Workers United β the group in the midst of organizing Appleβs Grand Central Store β is pushing for a $30 minimum wage, tuition reimbursement and more options for retirement plans.
