What does the law say about greenwashing?

In the UK, environmental claims made to consumers are governed by the Consumer Protection from Unfair Trading Regulations 2008 (CPRs).
(This is soon to be relocated to the Digital Markets, Competition and Consumers Act 2023.)

The CPRs make it unlawful for a business to engage in "unfair commercial practices".
These are defined broadly but include making misleading statements about a product or service (including by omitting material information) if it is likely to affect consumers’ purchasing decisions.

UK nationally approved electricity meters are approved under the Electricity Act 1989 and the pattern or construction of the meter type must conform to the requirements specified in the accompanying regulations.
Formal approval certificates are issued by the Office for Product Safety and Standards (OPSS) to manufacturers of electricity meters.

The meters are then listed in Schedule 4 of the Meters (Certification) Regulations, (SI 1998/1566), which is a statutory register of all pattern approved electricity meters suitable for billing purposes in the UK.

Of those who reported a problem, 41% said their energy company wasn't automatically receiving readings.

IST - An important part of consumer protection by ensuring only meters that operate within the prescribed limits of accuracy are used for consumer billing.

There are a number of different conformity assessment options available for MID approval and manufacturers are free to choose between these.

For both gas and electricity meters the options are:
• B+D (i.e. type examination and quality assurance of the production process)
• B+F (i.e. type examination and product verification)
• H1 (i.e. full quality assurance plus design examination)
