With every other franchise that raped itself into the dirt, I am able to watch the older, better entries and be able to feel good about watching it, even if I know that it all ends in woke, revisionist slop. ATLA is the sole exception to this, watching the new movie, and when I rewatched the series years ago, all I felt was this sense of foreboding grief, like talking to a friend with terminal cancer. It really cannot be understated how badly they fucked that show by trying to do some True Detective esque anthology series.

The cardinal sin of any series is killing the protagonist. You do that, and with very, very few exceptions, it's over. Every generation of writers understood this, and then millennials came along, thought it was a genius plot device, and used it everywhere for like a decade. They thought they were so clever, but it just killed the entire series. You can't enjoy a movie or TV show if you know the main character (especially a chosen one) just grows up to lead a disappointing adult life and die an ignominious death; it just takes the wind out of your sails, no point in wasting your time if you know there's no sunset for the character to walk off into.
