UNPLUG TO UPLIFT - Safe Tech International's Webinar on Children's use of Technology

Twelve speakers from around the world discuss the growing problem of children and tech, offer solutions, and share initiatives being taken in their respective country.

• Perpetual screen time, both in schools and at home, is interfering with children's development of empathy, moral judgement, and imagination.
• Fast-paced games and shorts are interfering with the natural development of critical thinking skills, application, and effort.
• Disconnection from one another, themselves, and from the natural world is leaving children highly dysregulated and out of sorts.

And yet this is the generation that will take the helm of the polycrisis we are leaving to them – A world of interconnected crises exponentialized, magnified, and accelerated by tech and AI.

Now is the time to pause and consider how we might better help our children develop the wisdom they will need to steward technology in the service of Life.

LFN Launches Digital ID Resistance Project – It’s Time to Speak Up (20 November 2025)

Extract: At the request of our supporters, Liberty Fighters Network (LFN) has launched a focused national project to oppose the South African government’s planned Digital Identity (DID) system. While we are already managing over 20 ongoing public interest cases with minimal support, this initiative responds directly to the growing public concern over state surveillance, privacy erosion, and the quiet normalisation of digital control.

Our newly published discussion document, “To Digital ID, or not to go digital, that is the question,” unpacks the legal, ethical and practical implications of DIDs in plain language. We now invite every South African to engage, contribute opinions, and join the call to ensure participation in such systems remains voluntary — not compulsory by design or stealth.

Because Insurance Companies rate the risk as “HIGH.” Insurance companies compare the risks of electromagnetic radiation to lead and asbestos.

Children in particular are affected by the negative effects on memory, learning and behavior.

The study’s results have gained renewed relevance due to the current discussion about the effects of digital media on children and young people, the decline in learning and thinking presentations, and the debate about smartphone bans.

📢 IMPORTANT: How to Lodge Complaints About Digital ID and Forced Biometrics

In South Africa, no company or institution may force you to use digital identification systems or biometric verification. Biometric data — fingerprints, facial scans, voiceprints, anything of that nature — is voluntary, protected under POPIA, and can only be taken with your explicit, informed consent.

Despite this, some private companies and government institutions are now insisting on digital-only systems and mandatory biometrics. This is unlawful overreach. Alternatives must always be offered, and no organisation can penalise you for refusing digital or biometric enrolment.

If your rights have been ignored, or you have been pressured, coerced, or denied service for not providing biometrics, you can and should file a formal POPIA complaint with the Information Regulator.

Below is the official process to submit your complaint and ensure it is properly logged.

The Information Regulator no longer accepts complaints sent to [email protected]
All complaints must now be submitted through the Complaints Management System (CMS).

Follow the steps below so your complaint is properly logged and tracked:

1️⃣ Open the CMS Portal: https://eservices.inforegulator.org.za/complaints/default.aspx

2️⃣ Register a User Profile
Create an account before submitting a complaint:
• Click Register
• Enter your details
• Create your login
Then log in.

3️⃣ After Logging In
• Click Service
• Scroll down
• Select POPIA Complaints

4️⃣ Submit Your Complaint
Complete the form:
• Your details
• Organisation/person details
• Description of the issue
• Upload supporting documents
Click Submit.

5️⃣ All Future Communication Will Be Through the CMS
Do not send follow-up emails.
Use the CMS for updates, responses, uploads, and tracking.

🟦 MINI FAQ: Your Rights on Digital ID & Biometrics

1️⃣ Can a company force me to use a digital ID system?
No. Alternatives must always be available.

2️⃣ Can they require fingerprints or facial scans?
No. Biometrics are voluntary. POPIA treats it as special personal info requiring explicit, informed consent.

3️⃣ What if they say “everyone must do it”?
That is false and unlawful. No organisation can make biometrics mandatory for everyone.

4️⃣ What counts as forced/coerced consent?
• “Give biometrics or we can’t help you.”
• No alternative offered.
• Threats of account closure or service interruption.
• Telling you “no choice” or “must comply.”

All violate POPIA.

5️⃣ Can they deny services if I refuse biometrics?
No. Lawful alternatives must be provided.

6️⃣ Do systems need to prove they are safe?
Yes. Digital systems must be functional, secure, and alternatives offered before asking consent.

7️⃣ What if a company ignores my rights?
File a POPIA complaint via the CMS.

8️⃣ Does POPIA support my right to refuse?
Yes. You can refuse, withdraw consent, demand alternatives, and take action if rights are violated.

9️⃣ Can I complain against private companies?
Yes. POPIA applies to all organisations handling personal information.

🔟 Will my complaint be taken seriously?
Yes. CMS complaints are tracked, investigated, and can result in fines or enforcement.

About 6 weeks ago, in early December, my left ear was ruptured for the 4th time.
A mere one year after the last time.

Last year and this year in December, the ruptures happened here at home - with episodes of sharp and shrill high-pitch whistles that blew out my left ear. Needless to say, it’s excruciating, disorienting, deafening, and makes your jaw and other cranial bones seize.
The neurological shock lasts a long time.
