King Phillips War, also called Metcomets War, ran from 1675โ1678 and would define the relationship between the indians & American colonists. This was the genesis of the independent American character, as the colonists had no support of any of their mother countries & had to stand and fight on their own.
While there had been some clashes between colonists and indians prior to this, the scale of this one would set it apart. Many towns were burned to the ground, and some 10% of the military aged males of the colonies would die in the fighting.
The Indian Wars would continue until 1924 with the last Apache raid. These centuries of constant, low intensity warfare are the background radiation of the American identity.

Had a little bet with one of the old woods on the yard, who could bang out more burpees in a minute. I won. Barely. He laughed, wheezed, and paid up, with ink.
We did it in his two-man cell. His boy stood lookout. He had just cooked a fresh batch of soot ink in a bottle cap and clipped a guitar string from the chapel guitar. Sterile enough.
โWhatโs this โCultured Thugโ shit mean anyway?โ he asked, wiping sweat off his brow.
Itโs hard to explain Byron or Bowden to a man whoโs spent half his life reading nothing but rap sheets and commissary slips.
โYou remember when I went to solitary? Put hands on that lame?โ
He nodded. โof course Rundo, and you sent that kite after. Wanted books. Bunch of Roman history or whatever.โ
I nodded back. โIt was Seneca and Virgil I asked for. Thatโs cultured thug shit.โ
