The Gandhara scrolls feature the past life tales of the Buddha. They were kept in terracotta jars and survived due to the altitude and dry climate of the region. Even though, they were very fragile and took years to restore.

Gandhara was an ancient Buddhist kingdom in the region where Afghanistan and Pakistan now exist. There, early Mahayana Buddhism thrived.
