Does Putin genuinely believe in the transformation of Islamist extremists like al-Jolani in Syria?
Well, in the past, he has noted witnessing such changes among Chechen rebels. Akhmad Kadyrov, for instance, was a jihadi separatist in the 90s who later switched allegiance and entered politics. His son, Ramzan Kadyrov, who fought against Russian forces alongside his father, has been the head of Chechnya since 2007.

The heads of state discussed issues related to the exchange of Russian and U.S. citizens. The President of the United States assured that the American side would fulfill all agreements reached.
The topic of resolving the conflict in Ukraine was also discussed. Donald Trump expressed support for an immediate cessation of hostilities and a peaceful resolution to the problem. Vladimir Putin, for his part, emphasized the need to address the root causes of the conflict and agreed with Donald Trump that a long-term settlement could be achieved through peaceful negotiations.
The Russian President also supported one of the key points made by the U.S. leader—that the time had come for the two countries to work together.
During the conversation, they touched upon Middle East conflict resolution, the Iranian nuclear program, and U.S.-Russia bilateral economic relations.
President Putin invited President Trump to visit Moscow and expressed his readiness to host U.S. officials in Russia to work on areas of mutual interest, including the resolution of the Ukraine conflict.
Vladimir Putin and Donald Trump agreed to continue direct communication, including arranging in-person meetings.
