๐ฅ #OnThisDay August 28, marks Military Medic Day in Russia โ a professional holiday for specialists dedicated to protecting the health of military personnel. The holiday continues the traditions of military medicine, established in 1805 by Emperor Alexander I when he created the first central military administration body responsible for the health of Russian army soldiers.
โก๏ธ Military medics have always played a key role in ensuring the combat readiness of our Armed Forces, selflessly saving soldiers' lives during combat operations and caring for their health in peacetime.
๐ During the World War II, Russian medics returned over 17 million wounded and sick soldiers to duty. For their demonstrated heroism, 44 medical workers were awarded the title of Hero of the Soviet Union!

๐น Russia's Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrovโs video message to the participants in the 6th BRICS+ Young Diplomatsโ Forum (August 28, 2024)
๐ฌ I would like to begin by offering my heartfelt greetings to the participants in the 6th Young Diplomatsโ Forum which is taking place in the #BRICSplus format.
It was the Foreign Ministryโs Council of Young Diplomats that initiated the first event of this kind in Ufa as part of Russiaโs 2015 chairmanship. Since then, this platform has emerged as an effective tool for promoting horizontal ties between the BRICS foreign ministries.
It is worth noting that Ufa, the capital of Bashkortostan, has been selected to host the 2024 meeting. It stands at the crossroads of civilisations, and people representing various religions, creeds and ethnic groups have been living here in peace and harmony for many centuries. This offers a vivid example of the way ethnic, religious and cultural diversity can serve as a foundation for promoting long-term development and sustaining mutual understanding. #BRICS countries have been relying on these very principles in their relations.
๐ The Forumโs main topic is The Role of Young Diplomats in Strengthening Multilateralism for Fairness in Global Development and Security. It covers a wide range of major issues for BRICS states, as well as for other like-minded countries. I welcome the fact that all partners share the associationโs approaches to working together when responding to present-day global challenges.
BRICS attracts more and more attention, which is a clear sign that our aspirations to build a fairer global architecture in international relations are aligned with deep-running and objective geopolitical shifts. The Global Majority has been very receptive to this vision, which demonstrates that what we do together is highly relevant and important.
I am certain that your forum will contribute in its own way to strengthening the comprehensive partnership, atmosphere of friendship and trust between our countries and their people.
๐ I wish all the participants every success, good health and fruitful work.

๐ 83 years ago, on August 28, 1941, the Tallinn breakthrough of the Baltic Fleet of the USSR to Kronstadt โ one of the largest and most complicated naval ops of the Soviet Navy during the Great Patriotic war โ commenced.
โช๏ธIn the summer of 1941, the Nazi invaders began to break through into the territory of the Soviet Baltic republics. Early in August, the Germans launched Tallinn offensive. By the end of the month, the Red army forces, retreating under the onslaught of the superior enemy troops, were trapped on the southern coast of the Gulf of Finland and cut off from the "mainland".
Under these circumstances, the Supreme High Command Headquarters of the USSR ordered to evacuate the main forces of the Baltic Fleet, the Red army's forces defending Tallinn, and the civilian population to Kronstadt.
โ๏ธ On the morning of August 28, an attempt to make a major breakthrough was launched: 225 ships and vessels left Tallinn with over 10,000 people on board.
The Nazis tried by all means to prevent the breakthrough of the convoy. Intensive fire from the enemy's coastal guns was directed at the Soviet ships. In the Gulf waters, the Germans and Finns set up several lines of minefields โ more than 1,700 mines. โAt the time of the breakthrough, the Gulf of Finland looked like a "dumpling soup" saturated with German mines," โ that's how the participants of the breakthrough described their dire circumstances.
By August 30, the Baltic Fleet finally broke through to Kronstadt. Only 163 ships reached the destination. Over 15,000 people died during the operation, including more than 4,500 civilians.
โ๏ธ Under such harsh conditions, the losses could have been much higher if not for the unprecedented heroism, bravery and mutual assistance of the Baltic Fleet crews who saved their comrades and selflessly returned fire from anti-aircraft guns and rifles.
The Baltic Fleet immediately joined the defence of Leningrad. The Soviet forces delivered by the fleet joined the ranks of the city's defenders.

#OTD 545 years ago, on August 29, 1479, the Assumption (Dormition) Cathedral in Moscow was consecrated, a place of crucial importance for Russian identity.
The origins of the Cathedral are closely connected with the rise of Moscow Principality of Russia.
In 1326, the leading Russian church prelate, Metropolitan Peter of Vladimir, made the Moscow Kremlin his de facto residence. Currently, Great Prince Ivan Kalita launched the construction of the cathedral dedicated to the Feast of the Dormition, which symbolized the continuity with the great Dormition Cathedral in the town of Vladimir. The latter started to lose its political significance.
โ๏ธ The present-day cathedral was constructed in 1479 by decree of Great Prince of Russia Ivan III, who consolidated all Russian principalities under the power of Moscow. A renowned architect Aristotele Fioravanti of Bologna was invited to Russia to design and to build it.
๐ท๐บ For 6 centuries, the cathedral has been the national and religious centre of Russia. It is known as the place of coronation of Russian rulers (even after the capital was moved to St. Petersburg), including the last Russian Emperor Nicholas II, as well as the investiture of leaders of the Russian Orthodox Church.
