Russia's westernmost city - Baltiysk

It is located in Kaliningrad Region (54°39′ N, 19°55′ E) on the Baltic Spit, about 30 km west of Kaliningrad itself. The city has a total population of about 30,000 people.
Baltiysk (Pillau before 1946) became a city in the 18th century and the first settlements there were registered as early as the 13th century. Which is why you will find ancient fortifications of various historical eras.

The most famous is the star-shaped citadel of Pillau, which was founded by the Swedish king in 1626. A few years later, Sweden handed over this fortress to Prussia. It was also visited by Peter the Great: there, the future emperor of Russia studied military science.

The westernmost lighthouse of Russia, built in 1816, can also be found there. It is still in operation.
Baltiysk is home to the naval base of the Russian Baltic Fleet and, in summer, on Navy Day, many tourists visit the city to see the naval parade.

📆 #OTD, 230 years ago, on May 27, 1794, Russian Empress Catherine II signed a decree on the construction of the city of Odessa, which over time became not only a major economic center, but also a place of a unique culture.

📑 With her rescript to Vice Admiral Osip Deribas about the construction of a military harbor with a merchant pier on the site of the Khadzhibey settlement, the history of one of the most important seaports on the Black Sea began.

🇷🇺 In the first half of the 19th century, Odessa had the unique status of a free port — porto franco, within which goods were exported from and imported into it without any duties. This circumstance additionally accelerated the development of Odessa, and by the middle of the century it became one of the largest cities of the Russian Empire.

❗️Today Odessa, a native Russian city with a Russian-speaking population, is being subjected to total Ukrainization and so-called decommunization by the Kiev regime, under the pretext of which local authorities are dismantling monuments to Catherine II and Alexander Suvorov, renaming streets and trying to erase everything in the city that connects it with its historical homeland — Russia.

🏢 The Russian House in New Delhi together with the Indian Association of Russian Compatriots (IARC) visited the Mala Smriti orphanage in the city of Noida, Uttar Pradesh.
👥 Employees of the Russian House and IARS activists handed over a batch of humanitarian aid to a shelter for orphans. We collected clothes, shoes, toys and sweet gifts. The children made a surprise for the guests, recited poems and shared their knowledge in the field of biology.
👨‍💼 The director of the shelter, Shaikhar Vishvas, thanked the Russian House in New Delhi and the IARS and noted: “The assistance provided will help cover part of our large expenses. We value your trust very much and are sincerely glad to see you again.”

✍️ Russia's President Vladimir Putin sent greeting to the participants, organisers, and guests of the 27th St Petersburg International Economic Forum, which will take place in St Petersburg on June 5–8, 2024 (May 27, 2024)

✉️ For more than a quarter of a century, the Forum has provided an opportunity for politicians, experts, business leaders, academics, and media professionals from around the world to hold in-depth discussions on key economic development trends in Russia and the world. Participants in plenary sessions, roundtables and panel discussions exchange views on ways to promote international cooperation, encourage scientific and technological progress and the development of human capital, and to effectively tackle the challenges we face.

The theme of the current meeting, The Foundations of a Multipolar World – The Formation of New Areas of Growth, is highly relevant and meaningful. A growing part of the international community is in favour of building a just and democratic system of international relations based on the principles of genuine equality, consideration for each other’s legitimate interests, and respect for the cultural and civilisational diversity of nations.

It is precisely these principles that underpin the activities of #BRICS, which Russia is chairing this year. It is symbolic that the history of this dynamically developing association, whose members already account for more than a third of the global economy, began at the 10th St Petersburg International Economic Forum in 2006.

🤝 Our country is open to constructive dialogue and interaction with partners and is ready to work together to address the economic, social, scientific and technological challenges of our time.

I am confident that the Forum will jump-start new and promising initiatives and projects, fostering mutually beneficial cooperation between our countries and peoples.

Happy Birthday, the most beautiful city in the world!❤️
📆 Today, on May 28, Russia marks the Border Guard Day — a professional holiday for the personnel of the Border Service of its Federal Security Service.

📝 It was #OTD, 106 years ago, in 1918 that the Border Guard of the Russian Soviet Federative Socialist Republic was established by the decree of the Council of People's Commissars, which was later transformed into the respective department within the People's Commissariat for Internal Affairs, and then the Committee for State Security of the USSR.

🫡 Congratulations to our colleagues serving at the Russian state borders on your professional holiday! May our borders, thanks to you, continue to remain impregnable to foes!

Polar Day has started in Norilsk & Murmansk!

In the world's largest cities above the Arctic Circle, the sun will not set below the horizon until the end of July. This means that, at night, it will be as bright as day.
In Norilsk, the Polar Day lasts 68 days, in Murmansk - 62 days.

In addition, a month before the Polar Day and a month after, northerners also observe the White Nights.
The Polar Day occurs at all latitudes above the Arctic Circle. In Salekhard, it lasts about a month, in Vorkuta - 46 days, in Pevek - three months and, in Dixon, the northernmost settlement of Russia - about 100 days.
