#Opinion by Russian MFA Spokeswoman Maria Zakharova

💬 It is reported that about 10 killer whales (some say 12, 13 or 16), including at least one baby, have been trapped in drift ice off the coast of Hokkaido. According to Japanese media, the local authorities say they cannot be rescued.

Meanwhile, experts are confident that it is possible to save them, and it is not even necessary to use a full-fledged icebreaker. A ship of the lowest ice class would be enough to protect them from the wind and create an open area of water. Japan has, or at least had, such ships.

Where are all these environmentalists from the World Wildlife Fund, Greenpeace and other wonder organisations? Why aren’t they sounding the alarm?
🇷🇺 🤗 🇮🇳 On February 6, 2024, representatives of the Russian Embassy in India and the Folk Ensemble “Spasskaya Sloboda” from the Tula Region visited the Sancta Maria International School in Faridabad, Haryana.

Indian students for the first time took part in Russian folk games, dances, including the traditional circle ones - khorovods, got acquainted with the rural folklore of Central Russia, and tried their hand at playing accordion.

🎶 At the end of the event, they were already performing “Kalinka” with great enthusiasm along with Russian artists.

It was introduced by an interactive lecture, where students learnt about the course of the journey and its significance for future contacts between Russia and India.

🗺 The brave Tver merchant Afanasy Nikitin, sitting foot in India in the latter half of the XV century, has outpaced British, Dutch and Portuguese travelers. His legendary voyage and the book written about India have become the symbols of Russian-Indian friendship.

Why do deer perform ‘circle dances’?

The phenomenon of reindeer "running in circles" is such a mesmerizing spectacle! The animals gather in a herd and together circle around the same spot, moving relatively fast and in unison. They do this both in the tundra and when penned in corrals.

It turns out that the herd behaves like this when the animals feel agitated. For example, when they sense a wild animal nearby or are being bitten by gnats in the summer. While going round in a circle, they wait for the lead reindeer to act and then they calm down. On hot days, reindeer can move nonstop for 12 hours until they get tired. Usually, they move counterclockwise.

Reindeer have a strong herd instinct and repeat one another's and their leader's movements, believing it to be safer this way. Reindeer in the outer circle can end up moving closer to the center during the “circle dance”. The minimum size of a reindeer group is 20 animals.

Reindeer herders also know how to make the animals perform a “circle dance” when they need to drive them into a pen or capture animals needed for harnessing. To do this, they get the lead animals to start circling and all others begin to follow suit.
