​​There’s a legend that Baikal has its own “Nessie” and it’s a very scary story, actually. There are several descriptions of a “water dragon” that “dwells” in Mukhorsky Bay, the warmest part of the lake, and takes fishermen to his underwater kingdom. Some rumors say it is something like a huge sturgeon with an evil face; others say it is a lizard-monster with claws and “armor” along its back, while others believe that this beast looks like an ancient ichthyosaur, the ancestor of crocodiles. To placate the beast the locals “offered” furs, jewelry and food to the Baikal beast only several centuries ago. Some even practiced “blood” sacrifices, as well.

"We regard the International Roerich Memorial Trust as one of the most important projects of the Russian-Indian humanitarian cooperation and aim to turn it by joint efforts into a world-class cultural and educational center," the Russian Ambassador underscored.

One of the main events of the festival was the unveiling of a bust of the outstanding Tibetologist, linguist Yuri Roerich at the Urusvati Himalayan Research Institute, the founder and the head of which he was.

The guests were presented with a festive concert performed by educatees of the Helena Roerich Academy of Arts for Children and Russian students of the Indian Council for Cultural Relations, Delhi.

As part of the festival, an international conference “The Cultural Heritage of the Himalayas and the the Roerich Family’s Work: Significance for the Future” is held, in which scholars, political scientists, journalists from Russia and India take part.
