Sin is the transgression of the law, so if you are trying to repent of sin, are you inside or outside the law?
Romans 4:15 KJV
[15] Because the law worketh wrath: for where no law is, there is no transgression.
To be saved, we need the righteousness of God. That righteousness is Christ Jesus, and it is OUTSIDE THE LAW.
Romans 3:21-23 KJV
[21] But now the righteousness of God without the law is manifested, being witnessed by the law and the prophets; [22] Even the righteousness of God which is by faith of Jesus Christ unto all and upon all them that believe: for there is no difference: [23] For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God;
Notice, the promise which was to Abraham the father of faith, was NOT through the law. Indeed, if the law was the way to the inheritance, faith is completely void.
Romans 4:13-15 KJV
[13] For the promise, that he should be the heir of the world, was not to Abraham, or to his seed, through the law, but through the righteousness of faith. [14] For if they which are of the law be heirs, faith is made void, and the promise made of none effect: [15] Because the law worketh wrath: for where no law is, there is no transgression.
Galatians 3:26,29 KJV
[26] For ye are all the children of God by faith in Christ Jesus. [29] And if ye be Christ's, then are ye Abraham's seed, and heirs according to the promise.
Romans 11:6 KJV
[6] And if by grace, then is it no more of works: otherwise grace is no more grace. But if it be of works, then is it no more grace: otherwise work is no more work.

Real, biblical repentance is changing our mind by turning from unbelief to believing on the risen Lord Jesus Christ.
"Repent of sins" is unbiblical as shown by the two KJB verses below.
Now after that John was put in prison, Jesus came into Galilee, preaching the gospel of the kingdom of God, and saying, The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God is at hand: repent ye, and believe the gospel.
Mark 1:14 - 15 KJB
And God saw their works, that they turned from their evil way; and God repented of the evil, that he had said that he would do unto them; and he did it not.
Jonah 3:10 KJB
God repented. Did He sin? No. So does repent mean turn from sin? No, because God repented because He was going to overthow Nineveh by doing evil to them but then he did not do the evil to Nineveh. The way God went from saying He would do evil to Ninevah, to not doing the evil to Ninevah's people, is that God changed His mind on what He was planning to do/going to do.
Repent means a change his mind.

Is repenting of/turning from sin a works based salvationism?
Let's search the Scriptures:
The works of the people of Nineveh, was they turned from their evil way
Jonah 3:10 KJBπ
And God saw their works, that they turned from their evil way; and God repented of the evil, that he had said that he would do unto them; and he did it not.
What works of turning from evil way did the people of Nineveh do? When we look at Jonah 3:5-9 KJB, we see all specific works of turning from sin that they did, which are mentioned below:
-They (people of Nineveh) proclaimed a fast
-They put on sackcloth
-The king of Nineveh laid his robe from him, covered him[self] with sackcloth, and sat in ashes.
-The king of Nineveh and his nobles proclaimed and published the decree to not let man or beast, herd or flock, to taste anything, feed, or drink water, and that man and beast be covered with sackcloth, cry mightily unto God, and turn from their evil way and the violence in their (people of Nineveh's) hands.
-The people of Nineveh, along with the king of Nineveh and his nobles, followed the decree and covered both themselves and all their beasts with sackcloth, cried unto God, and turned from their evil ways and violence, because immediately God sees the people of Nineveh's works that they turned from their evil way.
Jonah 3:4 - 10 KJB
[4] And Jonah began to enter into the city a day's journey, and he cried, and said, Yet forty days, and Nineveh shall be overthrown.
[5] So the people of Nineveh believed God, and proclaimed a fast, and put on sackcloth, from the greatest of them even to the least of them.
[6] For word came unto the king of Nineveh, and he arose from his throne, and he laid his robe from him, and covered him with sackcloth, and sat in ashes.
[7] And he caused it to be proclaimed and published through Nineveh by the decree of the king and his nobles, saying, Let neither man nor beast, herd nor flock, taste any thing: let them not feed, nor drink water:
[8] but let man and beast be covered with sackcloth, and cry mightily unto God: yea, let them turn every one from his evil way, and from the violence that is in their hands.
[9] Who can tell if God will turn and repent, and turn away from his fierce anger, that we perish not?
[10] And God saw their works, that they turned from their evil way; and God repented of the evil, that he had said that he would do unto them; and he did it not.
At this point, this is when the repent-of-sins-to-be-saved crowd & the turn-from-sins-to-be-saved crowd, will attempt to use Jonah 3:9-10 to claim "see, turn and repent are right next to each other, so repent is turn and thus to repent is to turn from sins to be saved".
However, they ignore the biblical fact that when Nineveh's king said "Who can tell if God will turn and repent" in the first half of Jonah 3:9, the second half/part of Jonah 3:9 reveals that the king of Nineveh pleaded and wanted God to turns from this - that God turn by turning away from His fierce anger, not from sins, so that the king, his nobles, and Nineveh's people would not perish.
Who can tell if God will turn and repent, and turn away from his fierce anger, that we perish not?
Jonah 3:9 KJB
Turning from evil ways is a work (Jonah 3:10). Evil ways are sins as per 2 Kings 15:27 - 28 KJB & 1 Kings 13:33-34
In the two and fiftieth year of Azariah king of Judah Pekah the son of Remaliah began to reign over Israel in Samaria, and reigned twenty years. [28] And he did that which was evil in the sight of the LORD: he departed not from the sins of Jeroboam the son of Nebat, who made Israel to sin.
2 Kings 15:27-28 KJB
1 Kings 13:33-34 KJB
After this thing Jeroboam returned not from his evil way, but made again of the lowest of the people priests of the high places: whosoever would, he consecrated him, and he became one of the priests of the high places. [34] And this thing became sin unto the house of Jeroboam, even to cut it off, and to destroy it from off the face of the earth.
Conclusion: Turning from evil way/sin is a work.

Generally when the doctrine of repentance comes up, we think of false prophets like Ray Comfort, or John Macarthur, Lordshippers and others who add the teaching of works to justification by faith.
These vipers are neo-Catholics who deny the glory of God revealed in our redemption, found only in His grace and by the blood of Christ, eternal life in His resurrection, reconciliation and forgiveness, adoption into the kingdom. Heirs to the promise.
They add works of the law to justification and keep people in perpetual doubt of if they are truly saved. It is a means of control and it denies the liberty found in the Lord Jesus.
There are others, many well meaning believers, who have been raised with false Bible versions, or taught by honest pastors misled by Bible college or extrabiblical reading, into appending "...of your sins" to the word repent.
This phrase never appears in scripture.
And, in my experience, these people are straining at a rhetorical gnat and swallowing a camel, by trying to square their trust in salvation by grace through faith, with a vain tradition. They create a semantic trap for themselves, to the detriment of the Gospel.
They will say that repent of sins actually just means acknowledging you're a sinner which is part of biblical repentance. If we can't acknowledge we're sinners in need of salvation, how in the world could we accept the free gift of it?
And God's not going to quibble with them over their misunderstanding of the term or use of it.
Brothers shouldn't fight each other over pedantic semantics.
However, the danger of being trapped in that snare of allowing the preaching of men to autocomplete a biblical phrase with something that doesn't appear in the text, comes when you're giving people the gospel. It's sows confusion, and here is how.
Let's just say someone approaches you online or in real life and says that they are heartbroken. They feel worthless and trapped in sin. They have an addiction or are in a position where they can't break free. They know they are damned, know God is real and have a head knowledge that Jesus might be the answer they are seeking, because the Spirit is working in them.
And they desperately need help.
And one comes to them and says, that all have sinned and fallen short of the glory of God, there are none righteous. That we're all sinners, deserving death and hell, the good news is Jesus paid that price for us and we only have to believe on Him and be saved. That while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us. That we may have peace with God through His son, with the eternal security that, even though we may sin in the flesh, we are sealed by the Spirit unto the day of redemption.
(This obviously is an abridged version of the Roman's road, where we show them from scripture all of these points because faith cometh by hearing and hearing by the word of God, I am summarizing because I am writing to those who have accepted this all to be true and called upon the name of the Lord, Jesus Christ, that they may be healed.)
And say another says to them repent of your sins and believe on the Lord Jesus Christ and thou shall be saved.
The first example is using scripture that is very specific of what you need to believe, to repent towards, that they may be saved. It is good news. They feel trapped and unworthy. They are told that, just as they are God will forgive them in Christ. That none are worthy but God so loved us that He gave His only begotten Son. Leading them to say "Lord, have mercy on me, a sinner," and believe that in Jesus name they are forgiven.
Jesus said our mission statement as Christians is to preach this good news to every creature.
The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he hath anointed me to preach the gospel to the poor; he hath sent me to heal the brokenhearted, to preach deliverance to the captives, and recovering of sight to the blind, to set at liberty them that are bruised.

The second, even if they are well meaning and have the best of intentions to win these people to Christ, actually create more of a problem, because to the unsaved they only hear the first part and see it as the very obstacle they already told you they are struggling with.
"I have to repent of my sins? What does that mean? Turn from my sins? Which ones? All of them? What if I can't? What if I relapse? What about things I didn't know were sins? Does it just mean willing to give up sin? I wish I could!"
It is bad news. We need Jesus because we are broken. Even the unregenerate man regrets their sin and dreads the looming punishment for it. How does telling them to turn from the sin they are trapped in in order to believe and be saved, save anyone?
And even if you're saved by faith, if you give this as your gospel, You're going to have people who could have been saved, who desperately needed to hear the truth, discouraged and turned away.
They may as well have gone to Ray Comfort for the gospel. Gene Kim. Some other reprobate. The Catholic Church.
We don't get healed that we can come to Christ. We come to Christ so that we may be healed.
Sirs, what must I do to be saved?
Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ, and thou shalt be saved.

πΈ Repentance! It doesnβt have to be a scary, confusing word. Always check the context.
2 Corinthians 7:8
For though I made you sorry with a letter, I do not repent, though I did repent: for I perceive that the same epistle hath made you sorry, though it were but for a season.
