John Ioannidis: The best epidemiologists remained silent – for fear of being “wiped out.”

The world-renowned Stanford epidemiologist delivers a damning assessment of the COVID-19 years: Science has been overshadowed by polarization, ideology, and a toxic climate.

Ioannidis reports that he and members of his family were attacked and even received death threats. The consequences for science have been devastating. Many qualified epidemiologists saw what happened to critics – and chose to remain silent.

“If we tried to do or say anything, we would be completely wiped out. Our careers would be over. Who knows, maybe we would even be dead,” colleagues told him.

His most serious accusation:

“Most of the people who determined the narratives had no clue about epidemiology.”

The actual epidemiologists withdrew and left the field “to people who weren’t epidemiologists.”

Ioannidis himself stayed – despite the pressure. Not because he claims to have always been right. On the contrary: He explicitly admits that his research could also contain errors. But especially in a historic crisis, it was his duty to continue searching for the most reliable evidence possible.

A bitter conclusion: Just when an independent scientific debate was most urgently needed, a climate of politics, media, ideology, and personal intimidation silenced the very experts who spoke out.
