Before today, Youssef was beaten and arrested on December 9th, 2023, but he was released two hours later because the arrest would violate the agreement. At the time of his release, Youssef served three months of his administrative detention without charge or trial.
The Prisoners' Club noted that this arrest sets a dangerous precedent for the others from the 169 children and 71 women released in November's exchanges. Today, we remember the historic Beit Lid martyrdom operation. On this day in 1995, two martyrs—Anwar Sukar and Salah Shaker—disguised themselves as IOF soldiers, killing 24 soldiers and injuring 69 with 15kg of TNT. The soldiers were all gathered at the Beit Lid bus stop with little organization, returning to their bases after a weekend holiday.
Due to a recently-forged alliance between Hamas and PIJ, the explosives used were that of the heroic martyr, the Engineer Yahya Ayyash. This operation was the first of its kind in the area (between the settlement of “Tel Aviv” and occupied Haifa in Netanya, near Tulkarem), and the first double martyrdom operation, indicating the far reach of the Palestinian resistance. Notably, it was the first major operation of PIJ.
A third martyr, Shadi Abdelrahim, was set to kill zionist Prime Minister Rabin and his guards, but he was not martyred until 2001 in another operation. In response to this operation (dubbed the "Double Rocket"), the IOF planned to assassinate PIJ founder Fathi Shaqaqi, doing so in Malta in October of that year, leading to his martyrdom.
It is a day that the temporary cannot forget, and a day in which the earth shook under the feet of the colonizers. Glory to the resistance!
