The Republican Liberty Caucus of Arizona Opposes SB1102

The strike everything amendment to SB1102 would extend the Maricopa County transportation excise tax for 20 years, while allocating 39% of the revenue towards public transportation and light rail. Light rail is an incredibly wasteful, inefficient use of taxpayer money. We respectfully oppose this tax extension.

SB1102 is scheduled for Committee of the Whole in the House on Monday, July 31.

β€œI think this will bring in about four times the revenue over 20 years than it did in the last period. This is a missed opportunity to reduce the rate a little bit and to be fiscally responsible.”

Rep. Neal Carter explains why he voted No on SB1102 (extension of the Prop 400 Maricopa County transportation excise tax)

β€œLess than one percent of Maricopa County residents use public transit. This bill would have almost 40% of this new tax going to pay for something used by less than 1% of Maricopa County residents. Liberty-minded conservatives like myself, we frequently get the criticism, β€˜If we did away with this tax, who would build the roads?’ How about somebody builds them without spending a dollar funding pet projects that nobody uses, for every dollar that they spend to build roads.”
